East sweeps Shelbyville Relays
SHELBYVILLE — Despite competing for the third time in five days Saturday, the Columbus East boys and girls swam to championships in the Shelbyville Relays.
The Olympian boys scored 104 points to 88 for runner-up Pendleton Heights. The East and Pendleton girls were tied going into the final event, and the Olympians pulled that out to edge the Arabians 102-98.
The East boys, who tied with Shelbyville for last year’s title, set meet records in the first two events. Branson Young, Ryan Singer, Zach Statler and Chad Kelly won the 200-yard medley relay in 1 minute 48.46 seconds; and Justin Borowski, Young, Evan Wieneke, Mason Curry took the 800 freestyle relay in 8:17.37.
Borowski and Curry also teamed to win the 1,000 freestyle relay in 11:11.98, and Borowski, Colby Hertle, Evan Wieneke and Kelly took the 200 freestyle relay in 1:41.00. Statler, Young and Singer captured the 150 breaststroke relay in 1:34.06.
“Another goal the kids had is to win this meet, and they had a good day,” East boys coach Dave Fribley said. “We had some good competition, and that’s what these guys want this year. It’s like that old song, ‘Hit Me With Your Best Shot’ — that’s what our guys are after this year, and that’s why they’re getting better.”
The Olympian girls also set two meet records. Maggie Johnson, Elizabeth Proffitt, Karissa Miller and Jennifer Utterback teamed to win both the 800 freestyle relay in 8:27.62 and the 400 freestyle relay in 3:50.09.
Utterback and Johnson also won the 1,000 freestyle relay in 11:23.67. Caroline Andress, Maddy Ping, Miller and Proffitt took the 375 freestyle relay in 3:51.66; and Ping, Kyra Moffitt, Cameron Kelly and Wieneke captured the 100 freestyle relay in 51.93.
“We had a goal of winning this, and the girls were very excited going into this meet,” East girls coach Jill Arnholt said. “They had great swims. After the week that we had with two other meets this week and them coming out like they did today was awesome.”
