Columbus Police Department earns accreditation

Staff Reports

Columbus Police Department has earned accreditation with an agency that establishes and reviews best practices and standards for law enforcement.

An independent review of the police department’s policies and procedures by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) determined that it was in compliance with all 40 standards it was evaluated on this year.

Standards included a review of use-of-force incidents, vehicle pursuits, department recruitment and selection of officers, and the collection and preservation of evidence.

The Columbus department initially earned CALEA accreditation in November 2014 and was reaccredited last year after a three-year review of department policies and procedures. The department also maintains state accreditation through the Indiana Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission.

“By maintaining the high standards required by both of these accrediting commissions, we can assure the public that our police department continues to operate following internationally recognized best practices,” Columbus Police Chief Jon Rohde said.
