Around Town – January 18

Orchids to …

• Bob Hyatt for the spot-on letter encouraging investing in people who will advance the country.

• Gary and Marilyn Cheek, from John Tinkey

• our neighbor on National Road who saved us from heavy hand-shoveling of the highway approach to our driveway with his tractor, and because the rural postal carrier appreciated it, too.

• Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer for standing up to the president.

• the high school student wanting to install a baby box in Columbus.

• The Republic for selecting Julie McClure as editor, because she is well-qualified and I am proud of her, from Zack Ellison.

• those who blow train horns at midnight, because some of us love the sound.

• the BMV for being open on a snowy Saturday and to Samantha and Louis for helping me renew my driver’s license, from Haskell Peddicord.

• the lady who paid for my lunch at Chick-fil-A when my card had no money on it, and I will pass it on.

• Loesch Heating for their prompt, courteous response to my heating issue.

• Indiana Smokehouse for reopening, because I love the décor and the good food.

• Mike Miller for cleaning the snow out of our drive and to Mike and Norvilla for always looking out for their neighbors.

• Dr. Steve Newton and the Hope Veterinary Clinic staff for loving Mitzi, from Ed and Donna.

Onions to …

• people who won’t explain why the wall is urgent now but wasn’t the past two years when Republicans controlled Congress.

• government officials for making decisions for the rest of us based on their religious values.

• people who would rather pay increasingly higher health insurance premiums and face bankruptcy for medical bills and rather than consider some sort of universal health care.

• the growing number of people in the United States who do not identify with any religion.

• the president, who seems more interested in pleasing Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh and Vladimir Putin than serving the American people.

• the president who throws temper tantrums.

• anyone who thinks either political party is wiling to compromise on issues, including the wall.

• people complaining about train whistles, because the whistles could save lives.
