Central seventh-graders win Salem Shootout

The Central Middle School seventh-grade boys basketball team captured the Salem Shootout last weekend, beating Paoli 52-35, South Central 70-37 and Silver Creek 50-41.

Connor Hensley led the Chargers with 27 points against Paoli, 19 against South Central and 28 against Silver Creek. Chris Bowling added 15 against South Central, and Dominic Allman had 14 against Silver Creek.

Jennings wins tourney

The Jennings County eighth-grade boys won the Scottsburg Tournament, beating Madison 42-37 and Scottsburg 55-34.

Owen Law led the Panthers (20-2) with 18 points, and Lane Zohrlaut added 11 against Madison. Keegan Manowitz scored 18 against Scottsburg.

Chargers sweep Panthers

Central swept the Jennings County boys Blue teams, winning the seventh-grade game 38-37 and the eighth-grade contest 42-37.

Skyler Lewis led the Panther eighth-graders (7-6) with 23 points. Peyton Bragg scored 11 for the Jennings seventh-graders (8-5).

WRESTLING

Jennings splits matches

Jennings County Middle School went 2-1 last weekend, beating Northside 78-47 and Lyndhurst 82-37 and falling to Clark Pleasant 104-24.

Eli Simmons (70 pounds), Lane Kirchner (85), Landon Malone (90), Nick Cortes (90), Tim Jefferies (95) and Carson Sorrells (106) all went 3-0 for the Panthers. Tyler Marksberry (80), Brathan Malone (95), Levi Marsh (100), RJ Barberis (125), Nate Doty (130), Robin Stayton (138), Skylar Cohee (145), Christian Hernandes (152) and Zell Giddens (220) all went 2-1.

Jennings (3-2) fell to Greenwood (79-54) on Tuesday. Malone (90), Marsh (100), Sorrells (105), Jonah Mathews (115), Barberis (120), Sam Burkman (130) and Hernandez (155) won by pin; and Teagan Trotter (145) won by decision.

BROOMBALL

Monsters stay unbeaten

Monsters of Rock ran its record to 7-0 with a 4-0 shutout of CCA Kutters. Zach Henderson and Kyle Roshak each scored two goals.

The Rockpile routed Slappin’ Balls 9-2. Ryan Jepson, Matt Street and Tyler Houchin all scored two goals; and Ellie Lutz, Todd Houchin and Dani Kareus all had one for Rockpile. Darien Castetter scored both goals for Slappin’ Balls.

Our Name Is Earl edged Hansons 4-3. Darren Eckerty scored two goals, and JR Huff and Ryan Ingalls each added one for Earl. Joshua Phipps had two goals, and Matt Psota one for Hansons.

Toyota Tsunamis slipped past Yoopers 6-5 despite five goals from the Yoopers’ Shawn Bauman. Greg McNealy scored three goals, Jimmy Robertson added two and Erich Miller had one for Tsunamis.

SWIMMING

Club Olympia takes second

Club Olympia finished second in the Center Grove Aquatic Club Super Bowl Splash swim meet, scoring 403 team points. Center Grove won with 767.

With the meet being the third competition for the month of January for most of the swimmers, the club elected to just participate in the distance events, normally held on the first day of a three-day invitational. At the end of the first day of competition, Club Olympia was in second place to the host team, with almost double the points of third place Avon Community Swim Team.

In the Boys Open division, Brady Beyer won the 500-yard freestyle in 5 minutes, 0.28 seconds and the 1,650 freestyle in 17:03.10, scoring 40 points. Cole Ehara finished second in the 400 indivdidual medley (4:58.42) and fourth in the 1,650 freestyle (19:14.75), scoring 32 points. Evan Patterson took second in the 500 freestyle (5:00.55), scoring 17 points. Matt Stuckwisch was fifth in the 500 freestyle at 5:37.19, scoring 14 points. Pratt Badve finished 14th in the 500 freestyle (6:21.68) and sixth in the 400 IM (5:23.54), scoring 16 points. Arjun Bhadoria was 12th in the 500 freestyle (6:07.75) seventh in the 400 IM at 5:40.14, scoring 17 points.

In the Girls Open division, Nalanie Cortez won the 500 freestyle in 5:15.28 and the 1,650 freestyle in 18:04.38, scoring 40 points.

In the Boys 11-12-year-old division, Misha Machavariani finished second in the 500 freestyle (5:33.65), third in the 400 IM (4:58.68) and third in the Boys Open 1,650 freestyle (19:02.34), scoring 49 points. Aidan Castillo took sixth in the 500 freestyle (6:48.25) and ninth in the 200 IM (3:05.08), scoring 22 points. Jay Venugopal was 13th in the 200 IM (3:57.99), scoring four points.

In the Girls 11-12 division, Daniella Preston finished seventh in the 500 freestyle (6:10.83) and seventh in the 200 IM (2:44.09), scoring 24 points. Cassidy Furnish, swimming unattached, finished 20th in the 500 freestyle (7:09.94) and 20th in the 200 IM (3:06.65).

In the Girls 10-and-under division, Zoie Chandelkar finished fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:52.91) and sixth in the 200 IM (3:17.42), scoring 28 points. Brooklyn Pendelton took seventh in the 200 freestyle (3:00.18) and ninth in the 200 IM, scoring 21 points. Advika Badve, was 14th in the 200 freestyle (3:42.12) and 13th in 200 IM (3:41.63), scoring seven points.

Connelly Furnish, swimming unattached, finished third in the 200 freestyle (2:40.52) and fifth in the 200 IM (3:13.16), scoring 30 points. Nandini Kondhare took 11th in the 200 freestyle (3:17.89) and 14th in the 200 IM (3:50.11), scoring nine points. Sanaa Kulkarni was eighth in the 200 freestyle (3:02.62) and 10th in the 200 IM (3:27.30), scoring 18 points. Grier Lane, unattached, finished sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:55.66) and 12th in the 200 IM (3:34.19), scoring 18 points. Lovely Panda  took 13th in the 200 freestyle (3:29.63) and 15th in the 200 IM (3:53.32), scoring six points. Jahnavi Venugopal was 15th in the 200 freestyle (3:51.02) and 17th in the 200 IM (4:25.83), scoring two points.

In the Boys 10-and-under division, Joshua Pendelton finished sixth in the 200 freestyle (2:51.16) and fifth in the 200 IM (3:14.16), scoring 27 points. Tony Machavariani took 11th in the 200 freestyle (3:23.66), scoring six points. Shreyan Kulkarni was 13th in the 200 freestyle (4:20.13), scoring four points.

Donner hosts invitational

Fifteen teams participated in Donner Swim Club’s annual Donner Winter Invitational. Competition was cut short on the final day because of hazardous weather conditions.

On the first day of competition, Isaac Proffitt finished third in the 1,650 freestyle, with Brock Smith placing fourth. For the girls, Josie Havenaar finished fifth, Abby Proffitt sixth and Josie Franks seventh.

In the 200 IM, Luis Valerdi finished fourth in the 9-10 boys age group, and Nitya Garg was eighth for the 9-10 girls. Ainsley Sherlock was fifth, Kara Buntin sixth and Alison Clauss 13th in the 11-12 girls age group.

In the 200 freestyle, Mridula Muthukumaran finished 11th and Garg was 15th in the 9-10 girls age group.

In the 12-and-under 500 freestyle, Cora Tregoning placed second for the 9-10 girls. In the 11-12 girls age group, Ainsley Sherlock took 11th, Kara Buntin 12th, Clauss 15th and Emma Swenson 16th.

On the second day of competition, Havenaar finished 10th and Natalie Brown 13th in the 13-and-over girls 200 freestyle. Havenaar also placed 10th in the 100 backstroke, 14th in the 100 breaststroke and 12th in the 50 freestyle. Franks was 13th in the 13-and-over girls 500 freestyle.

Smith placed 15th in the boys 13-and-over 100 breaststroke and 11th in the 500 freestyle. Carter Howell took 12th in the 500 freestyle, and Caleb Barrentine was third in the boys 15-and-over 50 freestyle.

Aabha Kulkarni finished fourth in the girls 6-and-under 50 freestyle, second in the 25 breaststroke and third in the 25 backstroke. Aditi Zope placed fourth in the 25 backstroke. In the 7-8 boys age group, Xavier Zhang took 14th in the 50 freestyle and 16th in the 25 breaststroke. Felix Valerdi was 16th in the 50 freestyle. Krishna Seethanaboina finished 14th in the 25 breaststroke.

Clauss placed 5th in the girls 11-12 100 backstroke, and Ainsley Sherlock took 13th. For the 11-12 boys 100 backstroke, Isaac Proffitt was ninth.

Mridula Muthukumaran finished sixth and Abby Proffitt 10th in the girls 9-10 100 backstroke.

Isaac Proffit placed ninth in the 11-12 boys 50 freestyle. In the girls 11-12 50 freestyle, Ainsley Sherlock placed 13th. In the 9-10 age group 50 freestyle, Abby Proffitt took sixth, Muthukumaran ninth and Morgan Hollinger  16th. Pranav Nalole was 13th for the 11-12 boys 50 freestyle.

In the 11-12 girls 100 breaststroke, Ainsley Sherlock finished seventh. Isaac Proffitt took 13th, and Conner Hoffman was 14th for the 11-12 boys 100 breaststroke.

In the 9-10 girls 50 butterfly, Abby Proffitt placed ninth, Nitya Garg 15th and Muthukumaran 16th. For the 9-10 boys 50 butterfly, Pranav Nalole took 11th, Aarush Mahato 12th, Dereck Prieto Marina 13th, Luis Valerdi 15th and Levi Bense 16th.

In the girls 11–12 200 freestyle, Ainsley Sherlock finished 11th and Clauss 16th. Isaac Proffitt was ninth in the boys 11-12 200 freestyle.
