County library launches Next Chapter book club
The Bartholomew County Public Library will launch a community-based book club next month for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The Next Chapter Book Club is aimed at reading to learn, rather than learning to read. BCPL outreach librarian Sandy Allman said the focus of the group is on a social setting where everyone will read aloud, regardless of reading ability.
Allman has conducted a program for over a year called Skill Builders for adults with developmental or intellectual disabilities. During that time, they play games, do a craft or make a simple recipe.
“That program has taken off, with between 15-25 participants each month from area agencies,” Allman said. “I thought the Next Chapter Book Club would be a great way to expand programming to this particular demographic.”
Individuals who are interested in joining the club or volunteering should contact Allman at sallman@mybcpl.org.

Tri Kappa is seeking applicants for the Abby Brinkman Memorial Scholarship for $1,500 for a high school senior in Bartholomew County planning to pursue a degree in the medical field.
The award was created in memory of Brinkman, a Columbus East graduate and fourth-year medical student at Indiana University. Brinkman died in a diving incident in 2005.
Students should submit their applications, along with a high school transcript, two letters of reference and an essay by April 1. Applications and additional information can be found at local school guidance offices or by emailing Tri Kappa scholarship chair Carrie Beckort at carriebeckort@gmail.com.
ABC Stewart students spend day at Statehouse
A group of ABC Stewart School sixth grade students served as Senate pages for Sen. Greg Walker, R-Columbus, on March 6.
The students met with Walker at the Indiana Statehouse to ask questions about how state government works and his legislative plans this year.
ABC Stewart’s 2013 graduates were also invited to visit the school earlier this month to talk to students about their experiences moving from ABC Stewart to middle and high school.
