Graduates of Columbus High School and Columbus North High School will celebrate 150 years of history for the two schools at a gala reunion on May 11.
The event is the final installment of a nine-month celebration hosted by the Bull Dog Alumni Association to celebrate the anniversary.
The high school’s 150-year history covers three different building names in two different physical locations in Columbus.
The first high school, called Central School, opened in the fall of 1868 on Seventh Street, where Central Middle School is now located. Central School morphed into Columbus High School at the Seventh Street site in 1905.
A new Columbus High School building opened in 1956 at 1400 25th St., and its name changed to Columbus North High School in 1972, when Columbus East High School opened.
“We wanted to come up with a way for the entire community to celebrate and culminate the 150th anniversary,” said retired choral director Janie Gordon, a member of the gala organizing committee. “The event will replicate a class reunion.”
The night begins at 5 p.m. with a meet and greet. A cash bar and heavy hors d’oeuvres will be available.
Alumni and current members of the Debuteens and Music Men showchoirs will perform at 7 p.m. followed by a mix and mingle time for classmates and retirees to catch up and reminisce.
Gordon said there will also be a special guest appearance during the 7 p.m. program but said that will remain a surprise.
The gala reunion is at Mill Race Center, 900 Lindsey St., from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. May 11. Cost is $20 per person. To reserve a spot, download the registration form at columbusnorthalumni.org/150th-anniversary-gala-reunion/.
