Letter: Be careful in labeling those who voted for Trump

This is in response to John Vanderbur’s letter chiding “white evangelicals” for voting for our current president. I’ve grown weary of those ascribing motives to us “white evangelicals” for voting for Trump.

Did I rush to the polls on Election Day to vote for Trump? Yes, I did. I took my privilege to vote seriously. But, it was not because he sat on a white horse of morality. In fact, I would agree with some of Mr. Vanderbur’s assessment of our current president. I suspect most white evangelicals, or any evangelicals for that matter, were torn in their decision. But I also suspect that many evangelicals voted for Trump because his opponent had a decidedly opposing view of abortion.

I am saddened at the state of our country, the hatred, animosity and polarization, as Mr. Vanderbur is. But my thoughts are much more directed toward the sanctity of life and the unborn baby. If our country is comfortable with taking the life of the unborn, as we see in recently enacted laws in New York and Virginia, we will never move from the path of “dishonesty, deception, lies, illegality, and immorality” as Mr. Vanderbur’s letter correctly says.

Will I vote for Trump in the next election? Hard to say. I suppose it depends on who his opponent will be.

So, I would hope Mr. Vanderbur and others would consider this when ascribing opinions on why we white evangelicals voted for who we did. People should consider that mine is but one of many different stories among those whom some seem so eager to broadly label, such as when Mr. Vanderbur’s letter stated that we “have closed our eyes to morality, decency, truthfulness, and the God we profess to believe in."
