Hebenstreit Scholarship awarded to Isbill

Jonathan Isbill, Hartsville, received the 2019 Hebenstreit Memorial Scholarship through the Indiana Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Isbill is a graduate student at Ball State University where he maintains a 4.0 GPA.

Isbill aspires to become a writer, speaker and consultant. He also wants to own a private practice as a registered dietician.

The Hebenstreit Memorial Scholarship is in honor of Mary Hebenstreit from Carmel. Hebenstreit graduated from the College of Saint Theresa in Minnesota and completed her dietetic internship at Good Samaritan Hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.

As a consultant registered dietitian, Hebenstreit’s clients were group homes, and she taught food service classes as well. Since her death in 1983, the Hebenstreit family has donated the funding for the scholarship in her name every year.

High school seniors earn college credits

High school seniors in Bartholomew and surrounding counties have saved more than $4 million in college tuition funding this school year by earning credits through Ivy Tech Community College before graduating high school.

More than 16,500 credits were awarded to seniors from each high school in the area counties through the college’s dual credit program, which allows high school students to complete college-level courses at their high school taught by high school teachers approved by Ivy Tech. They can also earn credits through dual enrollment by attending classes at the college’s Columbus campus.

Students at each of the area high schools earned the following total number of credits and tuition savings:

Bartholomew County

Columbus Christian: 48 credits and $12,000 in savings;

Columbus East: 947 credits and $236,750 in savings;

Columbus North: 3,143 credits and $785,750 in savings;

Columbus Signature Academy: 553 credits and $138,250 in savings;

Hauser: 475 credits and $118,750 in savings.

Jennings County

Jennings County: 1,831 credits earned and $57,750 in savings.

The savings is based on the average per-credit tuition of all public state universities.

Ivy Tech announces commencement dates

Ivy Tech Commmunity College will host a commencement ceremony for 813 graduates of the Columbus location on May 11 at 10 a.m at Columbus North High School.

More than 1,000 credentials will be awarded this year from the Columbus campus, including 325 associate degrees, 412 technical certificates, and 351 certificates.

Ivy Tech will award eight associate degrees to area high school students who have completed degree requirements through dual credit and dual enrollment. The college also will award 90 certifications to high school students, including 88 Certified Nursing Assistant certifications and two welding certifications.

Ivy Tech Columbus Campus Chancellor Steven Combs will officiate commencement and will be joined by Ivy Tech Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Dr. Andy Bowne and other college officials to honor the graduates.

Bowne will address the graduates and confer the degrees and certificates. Graduating student Brianna Fields of Hope will give the graduate address. She is earning an associate degree in nursing.

Stephen Pride will receive an honorary degree. Pride is the executive director of human resources, production control and purchasing at North Vernon Industry Corp.

He previously served as the director of human resources, training and customs compliance at Toyota Industrial Equipment Manufacturing Inc. While at Toyota, Pride was instrumental in developing and maintaining a partnership with Ivy Tech Columbus that included a sizeable donation from Toyota to renovate, expand and upgrade the college’s welding lab.
