Local man arrested after fleeing from police on foot

A local man was arrested after he attempted to flee on foot from Columbus police after a traffic stop.

Officers stopped a vehicle in the 2000 block of Central Avenue shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday driven by Tony D. Shuffitt Jr., 29, Columbus, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

The officers confirmed there was a parole warrant for Shuffitt’s arrest and asked him to step out of the vehicle, Harris said. After leaving the vehicle, Shuffitt fled on foot, Harris said.

Officers pursued Shuffitt on foot as he jumped several fences in the 2100 block of Pennsylvania Avenue, Harris said. Shuffitt was apprehended in the backyard of a nearby residence a short time later and placed under arrest, Harris said.

Shuffitt was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of a controlled substance, resisting law enforcement and the warrant.
