NORTH VERNON — Democrat Matt York won the only contested race in North Vernon’s primary election.
York and Annie Payne were competing for their party’s nomination to be the candidate for North Vernon City Council’s at-large seat in the November general election. York won the nomination Tuesday by receiving 74 votes (57.36 percent) compared to Payne’s 55 votes (42.64 percent).
York will now challenge incumbent Jerry A. Lamb, a Republican, for the at-large seat.
Only 218 of 4,168 registered voters (5.23 percent) in Jennings County cast a ballot.
The November general election will feature two additional contested races. North Vernon Mayor Mike Ochs, a Republican, is seeking re-election against Democratic challenger Colleen J. Malone. Democrat Connie Rayburn, the incumbent District 3 Representative on the North Vernon City Council, will face Republican Baron Wilder.
Several candidates who were unopposed in the primary also are currently unopposed in the general election. They are:
Clerk-Treasurer R. Shawn Gerkin, a Democrat
Jack Kelly, Republican, city council District 1
Trent Wisner, Democrat, city council District 2
Brian Hatfield, Republican incumbent, city council District 4
