Bull Dogs win sectional

BLOOMINGTON — Colubmus North was moved into a stronger sectional this season, but that didn’t stop the Bull Dogs from winning again.

North edged Bedford North Lawrence 130-129 Saturday to capture its third consecutive sectional title, this time at Bloomington North. The Bull Dogs, who had won the Borden Sectional the past two years, advance to Saturday’s BNL Regional.

“It was actually a more difficult sectional this year,” North coach Nathan VanDeventer said. “We did not have a girls 4×100 relay team today, so that cost us a lot of possible points, but our kids did excellent today, and it worked out. It was a good day.”

Devin Ashcroft won Flight 5 of the shot put (27 feet, 9 inches) and Heat 6 of the 100 meters (18.72 seconds) to lead the Bull Dogs. Zach Friend (18-8) and Anthony Ashcroft (11-8½) took Flights 2 and 5 of the long jump, and Reed Duncan captured Heat 2 of the 100 (12.67).

North’s James Dwyer finished second in Flight 5 of the long jump (10-0) and Heat 5 of the 100 (16.17). Also taking second for the Bull Dogs were Matt Ruehman in Flight 2 of the shot put (39-0), Ryan Farrell in Flight 6 of the shot (19-½), Zach Friend in Heat 1 of the 100 (11.96) and Randall Watts in Heat 4 of the 400 (1:14.88).

Columbus East finished ninth as a team with 81 points. Joseph Perry won Flight 2 of the shot (41-2½), and Casey Bartholomew took Heat 2 of the 400 (59.66).

Also for the Olympians, Marin Wieneke finished second in Flight 3 of the long jump (13-3¾), Jakob Brown took second in Flight 3 of the shot (32-0) and Collin Cornett was second in Heat 6 of the 100 (19.12).

Panthers win at Borden

BORDEN — Jennings County won the Borden Sectional with 142 points. Seymour edged New Albany 94-93 for second.

Rusty Vaughn (13-9) and Ethan Smith (10-11) won their flights in the long jump, and Gunnar Wright (32-11) took his flight in the shot for the Panthers. Teagan Johnson (14.16) and Smith (14.35) won their heats of the 100, and Vaughn (1:02.56) and Brandon Lee (1:06.26) captured their heats of the 400.

Jennings also won the girls (1:03.69) and boys (53.12) 4×100 relays.

North splits pair

INDIANAPOLIS — Class 4A No. 5 Columbus North bounced back from a 4-2 loss to South Bend St. Joseph’s with a 16-7 win against Avon to finish 1-1 in the North Central Invitational.

Homare Takauchi went 4 for 4 with three RBIs for the Bull Dogs (20-7) against Avon. Grant Trinkle went 2 for 3 with a home run and three RBIs, and Austin Bode went 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs.

Jets down Cougars

ELNORA — Class A No. 5 Hauser scored five times in the first inning and went on to post an an 8-4 victory at North Daviess.

Trey Johnson went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, and Jackson Paradise went 2 for 4 for the Jets (18-4). Jacob Luken threw a nine-hitter.

Eagles edge Lions

SALEM — Brown County pushed across a run in the top of the seventh to pull out a 4-3 win at Salem.

J.T. Parry had a three-run double in the first inning for the Eagles (10-12). Eli Snider and Justin Partyka combined on a four-hitter.

Lancers clip Mohawks

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh finished the regular season with an 8-7 Mid-Hoosier Conference win against Waldron.

Bryce Burton went 3 for 4, Noah Detling went 2 for 3 with a two-run homer for the Lancers (6-14, 5-7). Coltan Henderson threw the final four innings to pick up the win in relief.

Panthers drop two

BROWNSTOWN — Jennings County lost twice in the Brownstown Central Round-Robin falling to the host Braves 9-3 and Madison 6-5.

Carson McNulty went 2 for 3 for the Panthers (7-13) against Madison.

Cougars win invite

HOPE — Trinity Lutheran won the Hauser Inivtational with a 340. Hauser finished second with a 376, and Edinburgh was fourth with a 451.

Jacob Keith led the Cougars with an 82. Mark Shoemaker and Jacob Sabotin each shot 84, Ryland Nierman added a 90 and Josiah Foster had a 98.

Sam Johnson led the Jets with an 84. Ethan Wallace carded an 88, Justice Gilliand added a 92, Keagan Miller shot 112 and Justin Stafford had a 116.

The Lancers were led by Bladen Hancock with a 79. Jordan Myers added a 109, Noah Childers shot 125 and Parker Neumann had a 138.

Eagle wins medalist

NEW CASTLE — Parker VanNess won medalist honors with a 3-over 73 to lead Brown County to a seventh-place finish in the New Castle Invitational.

New Castle Green won with a 305 at Westwood Golf Club. The Eagles finished with a 375 team total.

Curtis Lookebill carded a 94 for Brown County. Cooper VanNess added a 100, Rex Watters shot 108 and Peyton Proctor had a 130.

Panthers split games

ST. LEON — Jennings County bounced back from a 12-8 first-game loss at East Central to blank the Trojans 12-0 in five innings to earn a doubleheader split.

Haley Engelking went 3 for 4 with a double and a triple, Madi Skinner went 3 for 4 and Lexi South went 3 for 5 in the opener. Carissa Sabelhaus went 2 for 2 with two RBIs and Gabby Mahoney had a double and two RBIs.

Mahoney threw a two-hitter in the second game. Kylee Matern went 3 for 4 with a triple and four RBIs, Lexi South went 3 for 4 and Engelking went 2 for 3 with a double and three RBIs.

Mohawks edge Lancers

EDINBURGH — Waldron upset Edinburgh 10-8, forcing the Lancers to share the MHC championship with North Decatur.

The Lancers led 8-7 going to the seventh, but the Mohawks scored three times. Sidney Beier went 4 for 4 with two doubles and three RBIs, Taylor Littiken went 2 for 4 and Emma Wade went 2 for 5 with a triple for the Lancers (12-11, 8-2).

Panthers fall in final

GREENSBURG — Jennings County fell to Greensburg 4-1 in the Greensburg Sectional final, but the Panthers’ No. 1 doubles team advanced with a victory.

Callie Wilder and Liz Ertel beat Kirsten Fong and Sarah Schneider 6-4, 6-2 and will move on in the doubles tournament by remaining unbeaten in the postseason.

Ellie Hearne fell to Raegen Rigney 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, Reagan Brown lost to Bailey Menkedick 6-0, 3-6, 7-5 at No. 2 singles and Hailey Brown fell to Ellie Acra 6-1, 6-0 at No. 3 singles for the Panthers (11-7). Courtney Lykins and Abigail DeCamp lost to Claudia Westhafer and Aliyah Evans 7-5, 7-6 (4) at No. 2 doubles.
