North, Jennings make state

BEDFORD — Columbus North qualified for the state finals for the third consecutive year, and Jennings County made it for the first time with their finishes in Saturday’s Bedford North Lawrence Regional.

The host Stars edged Jennings 119-118 for the title. New Albany finished third with 109 points, followed by Columbus North (106). Bloomington North (94) and Jasper (88) claimed the fifth and sixth qualifying spots for Saturday’s State Finals.

Winning events for the Panthers were Crayton Morrison in Flight 4 of the shot put (30 feet, 11½ inches), Peyton Seeley in Flight 5 of the shot (26-7), Teagan Johnson in Heat 3 of the 100 meters (13.78 seconds) and Michael Ferguson in Heat 5 of the 100 (14.99).

Jennings’ Jadon Swindell in Flight 3 of the shot (33-5½), Brandon Harris in Heat 2 of the 100 (12.79), JoAnn Barriger in Heat 6 of the 100 (17.67), Owen Bonesteel in Heat 5 of the 400 (1:12.38) and Robert Pedigo in Heat 6 of the 400 (1:17.52) all finsihed second.

Alana Cook led the Bull Dogs with a win in Heat 6 of the 100 (17.22). Grace Williams, Elizabeth Dwyer, Cook and Tanner Johnson won Heat 2 of the Girls 4×100 relay (1:08.36); and Anthony Ashcroft, Sam Russell, Dalton Kirk and Reed Duncan captured Heat 2 of the Boys 4×100 relay (55.21).

Finishing second for North were Ryan Farrell in Heat 6 of the shot (18-0), Zach Friend in Heat 1 of the 100 (11.75), James Dwyer in Heat 5 of the 100 (16.03) and Sam Russell in Heat 2 of the 400 (58.68). Max Wilson in Flight 1 of the long jump (17-8¾, Noah Algee in Flight 1 of the shot (42-4½), and Randall Watts in Heat 4 of the 400 (1:12.24) all took third.

Bull Dogs take third

HENRYVILLE — Columbus North finished third as a team, and Columbus East’s Kody Reynolds won medalist honors with a 68 Saturday in the Providence Invitational at Champions Pointe, site of the regional.

Center Grove won the 16-team tournament with a 305. Floyd Central edged the Bull Dogs 309-311 for second.

Henry Kiel led North with a 74, Drew Smith carded a 77, Jackson Kerber added a 79, Jacob Niedbalski shot 81 and Luke Schneider had an 84.

The Olympians finished 10th as a team. Adrian Adams carded an 81, Mark Mayhew added an 85, Cole Schaefer shot 94 and Leyton Erfmeier had a 97.

East was coming off a 158-171 win at Greensburg on Friday at Greensburg Country Club, site of the sectional. Mayhew won medalist honors with a 36 in his second match of the season after returning from a knee injury. Reynolds carded a 39, Adams added a 41, Erfmeier shot 42 and Schaefer had a 46.

Saints top Lancers

MORRISTOWN — Edinburgh took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but Indianapolis Lutheran scored 16 unanswered runs to post a 16-1, five-inning victory Saturday in the semifinals of the Morristown Sectional.

Coltan Henderson went 2 for 3 for the Lancers (7-14). Noah Detling had a triple, and Bryce Burton and Zach Giles had doubles.

Edinburgh had advanced with a 3-0 first-round win against Greenwood Christian Academy on Thursday. Henderson threw a three-hitter and struck out seven, and Burton had two RBIs.
