Driver arrested after single-vehicle accident reported

William Hickey

A local man was arrested Tuesday night for operating a vehicle while intoxicated after he nearly struck another vehicle head on and later resisted when Columbus police tried to arrest him.

Officers were sent to the area of Taylor and National roads shortly before 11 p.m. about a single vehicle accident. A witness advised that a red passenger car nearly struck another vehicle head on after the driver struck a concrete median.

Officers arrived a short time later and spoke to the driver involved in the crash, William D. Hickey, 22, of Columbus, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman. While speaking with Hickey, the officers observed that his eyes were bloodshot and he was unable to maintain his balance. The officers also noted that Hickey’s vehicle had multiple flat tires, Harris said.

Hickey was transported to Columbus Regional Hospital where he refused to submit to a blood test. The investigating officer later obtained a search warrant for a blood test.

Upon being discharged from the hospital, Hickey was placed under arrest and transported to the Bartholomew County Jail on the following preliminary charges: Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated (Prior Conviction), Resisting Law Enforcement and Criminal Mischief.
