Employees and visitors to the Bartholomew County Jail may soon be able to avoid the danger of walking across heavily-traveled Second Street in downtown Columbus.
A step toward creating 29 temporary parking spots in a vacant lot in the southeast corner of Second and Lafayette streets was approved Monday.
Bartholomew County commissioner Carl Lienhoop and county attorney Grant Tucker appeared Monday before the Columbus Redevelopment Commission, which owns the vacant lot east of the jail, to seek initial permission to use the property for parking.
Since the county only wants temporary parking spaces for a limited time, Lienhoop said the lot will have gravel, rather than asphalt, with bumpers installed to designate individual spaces.
The temporary easement being sought by the county for temporary parking comes with an option to renew every six months, redevelopment commission attorney Stan Gamso said.
