Solid waste district has free resources to help educators

Jessica Norcross

As the new education coordinator at the Bartholomew County Solid Waste Management District, I want educators and residents in Bartholomew County to know about free resources offered by the district.

I have a degree in natural resources and environmental science from Purdue University. I gravitated toward informal education throughout my career and look forward to working with schools, youth organizations and community groups in Bartholomew County through the various programs offered by the district.

Recycling Center field trip

Free educational tours of the Recycling Center are open to all ages and are offered year-round. Learn how materials collected for recycling are sorted to be made into new products! Take a tour of the bioswale or participate in an educational recycling presentation led by BCSWMD partner, kidscommons.

Transportation costs are covered by the district when using BCSC or FRHC school buses.

Landfill field trip

Free educational tours of the Landfill are offered seasonally during the school year for Grades 3-6, and during the summer for community groups. Take a trolley tour to learn how modern landfills are designed and constructed to protect the environment around them. Additional educational programming is provided by kidscommons at the Education Center and onsite wetlands.

Transportation costs are covered by the district when using BCSC or FRHC school buses.

Presentations

Free presentations on topics such as recycling, reuse, landfills and more are available year-round to classes and community groups in Bartholomew County.

School houses

The Little Red School House (LRSH) and Little Red School House Too (LRSH Too) are reuse facilities that have a variety of recyclable materials, such as cardboard tubes, egg cartons and glass and plastic containers. Binders, books, games and furniture are also available. Items are free, but limited, as availability depends on donations.

LRSH (Recycling Center) and LRSH Too (Landfill) are open to all Bartholomew County educators, including school teachers, scout leaders and community group leaders. LRSH is open from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. LRSH Too is open by appointment and 9 to 11 a.m. on select Saturdays. Remaining dates for 2019 are July 20 and October 26.
