An ordinance significantly increasing the fine for driving around barricades warning motorists of roads closed due to flooding is being considered
The Bartholomew County Commissioners asked county attorney Grant Tucker in May to use specific parts of existing ordinances from Jackson and Vanderburgh counties to write a new local ordinance. Rather than the state-imposed $140 fine for going around barricades, those two counties have established $500 fines for violations, Bartholomew County Emergency Management director Shannan Hinton said.
Hinton wishes to also charge violators $500, as well as have 24 new road closed signs created with a fine posted on it.
The new ordinance will go before the commissioners either Aug. 12 or 19. Unless rules are suspended, the proposal must be considered during two separate meetings.
