Those who would like to learn more about what has been going on under their feet might be interested in a presentation Thursday at the Jennings County Historical Society.

Polly Sturgeon, the outreach coordinator at the Indiana Geological and Water Survey at Indiana University in Bloomington, discuss the geological history of Jennings County and other issues as part of the historical society’s lecture series the third Thursday of each month.

The lecture, which begins at 6 p.m., is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.

“If you have special rocks or fossils you would like to know how old they are and other things about them, please bring them to the lecture so she can take a look. Polly will also discuss ways for you to identify characteristics of rocks,” said historical society volunteer Louise Malcomb, who arranged Sturgeon’s visit.

Sturgeon has a Master of Science degree with a specialization in geoscience education from Indiana University. She also earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Nazarene University and a certificate in museum studies from Northwestern University.

“Geology is the science of anything under the earth, and there are a lot of interesting things in geology,” Malcomb said. “Plan to come early and stay late.”
