North gets first win

SHELBYVILLE — Columbus North bounced back from Tuesday’s season-opening loss to Seymour with its first win of the season Thursday, a 25-17, 25-17, 25-17 victory at Shelbyville.

Madison White led the Bull Dogs (1-1) with 10 kills and four block assists. Reagan Kane recorded 13 assists and an ace, Jaylnn Reardon tallied 21 digs and an ace and Carley Finke and Kate Whaley each served an ace.

Madi Roop pounded seven kills, while Emma Tynan added six and Lauren Opalka and Sarah Bennett each had five. Kate Whaley notched 10 assists and 16 digs, Tynan notched one solo and one assist block, Roop and Gabby Genth each had two block assists and Finke and Ava McKinney each contributed 11 digs.

"I thought we served very aggressively and took Shelbyville out of their offense," North coach Caitie Greiner said. "Defensively, our back row really stepped up and kept several balls alive. All our hitters were effective at times. It was a great team effort and big jump from our play on Tuesday."

Jets sweep Eagles

OSGOOD — Class A No. 6 Hauser rolled to a 25-10, 25-11, 25-15 win at Jac-Cen-Del.

Hannah Johnson led the Jets (2-0) with 11 kills, two blocks and five aces. Aunaka Wasil recorded 25 assists, and Kylie Lock tallied 13 digs.

Also for Hauser, Lock and Olivia Wright each pounded six kills, Adrianna Musillami notched four assists, and Abby Branum added two assists. Wright and Marnie Schwartzkopf each had one block, Andi Clark contributed 11 digs, Shelby Fugate served five aces and Wasil added nine digs and two aces.

Lancers top Cougars

EDINBURGH — Edinburgh bounced back from a second-game setback to post a 27-25, 11-25, 25-10, 25-22 Mid-Hoosier Conference win against South Decatur.

Paige Burton led the Lancers (1-1, 1-0) with six kills and seven assists. Gracie Crawhorn notched three digs and five aces, Kaylee Swallows served five aces and Carly Cowan added two digs and three aces.

Lana Bell pounded 12 kills, Whitnye Burton recorded 17 assists, Ali Jameson tallied 20 digs and Brook Somers served seven aces to lead the Cougars (0-5, 0-1).

Eagles win in four

BEDFORD — Brown County rallied from a first-set defeat to post a 15-25, 25-14, 25-22, 25-16 season-opening win at Bedford North Lawrence.

Chloe Lee pounded 11 kills, Abigail Hollander recorded 32 assists, Lauren Akles had three blocks and Natalie Suding tallied 11 digs to lead the Eagles.

GIRLS GOLF

Bull Dogs roll

INDIANAPOLIS — Nathaly Munnicha and Annie Anderson each shot 36 to lead sixth-ranked Columbus North to a 153-209 win against Roncalli at Smock Golf Course.

Ella Wilks added a 38 for the Bull Dogs. Yestika Nischol and Macy Euler each shot 43, and Gwen Anderson had a 47.

East picks up win

SEYMOUR — Lauren Steinwedel won medalist honors with a 45 to lead Columbus East to a 201-222 win against Seymour at Shadowood.

Harley Gant carded a 45 for the Olympians. Peyton Meier added a 53, Katie Hong shot 55, Cristen Martinez had a 61 and Mattie Shoaf finished with a 62.

Lancers down Jackets

EDINBURGH — Morgan Calhoun won medalist honors with a 47 to lead Edinburgh to a 219-269 win against Morristown at Timbergate.

Haven Link added a 53 for the Lancers. Maddy McGaha shot 57 and Annelise Lollar had a 62.

East falls to Woodmen

GREENWOOD — Greenwood won all five matches in straight sets to hand Columbus East at 5-0 defeat.

Pranav Kumar fell to Ethan Gray 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Derek Heideman lost to Nick Belovie 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Daniel Murphy fell to Charlie Brooks 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for the Olympians (0-2).

East’s Emmit Romine and Matthew Degner lost to Ben Sobieray and Sam Fenner 6-0, 6-2 at No. 1 doubles. Wyatt Romine and Caleb Wettschurak fell to Spencer Aaron and Thomas Burtt 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Eagles blank Jets

HOPE — Brown County handed Hauser a 5-0 defeat in the Jets’ season opener.

Aaron McCann beat Ethan Wallace 6-4, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, Josh Miller downed Caleb Hoover 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles and Reid Davis topped Sam Miller 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3 singles for the Eagles (2-0).

Brown County’s Nolan Patterson and Aiden Burt beat Keegan Miller and Eli Miller 6-3, 6-3 at No. 1 doubles. Noah Cochran and Spencer Blee topped Carson Rose and Levi Gollmer 6-1, 6-1 at No. 2 doubles.

Bulldogs edge Panthers

NEW ALBANY — Jennings County won both doubles matches, but New Albany swept the singles matches to claim a 3-2 victory.

Joe Kelley and Jacob Vogel beat Lukas Know and Gavin Hamilton 1-6, 7-6 (11), 6-2 at No. 1 doubles, and Alex Leach and Owen Law downed Isaac Saegesser and Isaac Minton 7-6 (5), 6-3 at No. 2 doubles for the Panthers (0-2).

Jennings’ Wyatt St. John fell to Mitchell Meyer 6-2, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, Justin Ramey lost to John Fulmer 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2 singles and Greyson Jackson fell to JT Zimmerman 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Mohawks blank Lancers

WALDRON — Edinburgh opened its season with a a 5-0 MHC loss at Waldron.

Brayden McManaway fell to Mick Abbott 6-0, 6-3 at No. 1 singles, Travis Jones lost to Shawn Cole 6-0, 6-0 at No. 2 singles and Kolton Reed fell to Lucas Mitchell 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 singles for the Lancers. Parker Newman and Chase Littlejohn lost to Dalen Williams and Ian Carter 6-0, 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, and Trevor Moon and Cash Cunningham fell to Dakota Tillison and Mitch Coon 6-0, 6-2 at No. 2 doubles.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Panthers take third

SEYMOUR — Jennings County’s girls opened their season with a third-place finish in the Seymour Invitational. The host Owls won with 35 points to 59 for Charlestown and 68 for the Panthers.

Emma Morrison led Jennings in 21 minutes, 49.14 seconds for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Liz Wahlman ran 23:21.39, followed by Halle Franks (23:50.49), Sam Sproles (25:53.89) and Rilee Hicks (27:05.01).

BOYS SOCCER

Panthers edge Shawe

NORTH VERNON — Gavin Gunn scored a pair of goals to lift Jennings County to a 2-1 win against Madison Shawe.

Zane Law had an assist for the Panthers. Braidon Foster recorded eight saves.

Owls blank Eagles

SEYMOUR — Seymour jumped out to a 5-0 halftime lead and went on to hand Brown County an 8-0 season-opening defeat.

The Owls outshot the Eagles 27-2. Ethan Scott recorded 19 saves for Brown County.
