Pair of 35s lead North to victory

Nathaly Munnicha

Annie Anderson had watched as her older sisters Sydney and Holly went under par, but until Thursday, Annie had never done it herself.

Playing in one of the final home matches of her high school career, Annie put together that first under-par round. The senior fired a 1-under 35 on the front nine at Harrison Lake Country Club to tie teammate Nathaly Munnicha for medalist honors and lead sixth-ranked Columbus North to a 162-195 win against Southport.

“It was a good milestone for me, so I’m happy to be able to have done it,” Anderson said. “I thought I played well, and I got to play with Nathaly, and that’s always fun. We always play well together.”

With a shotgun start, Anderson and Munnicha began on No. 7 and finished on No. 6. Munnicha birdied No. 7, bogeyed No. 8 and birdied No. 2, while parring the other six holes.

“I had some really bad shots,” Munnicha said. “My tee shots weren’t as well struck as I usually would like, but what really saved me was my irons. I was hitting it pretty close, but I couldn’t make many of my birdie putts.”

Anderson birdied No. 9 and No. 2 to get to 2-under. She bogeyed No. 3, but birdied No. 5 to get back to 2-under before bogeying her final hole, No. 6.

“I couldn’t necessarily stay (at 2-under), so it was kind of a battle,” Anderson said. “But I’m happy where I finished. It was a good round, and I know what I can improve on.”

Anderson’s younger sister Gwen added a 44 for the Bull Dogs. Ella Wilks had a 48 to round out the scoring.

Also for North, Yestika Nischol carded a 49, Erica Bishop shot 56, Ratisha Rashmil had a 64 and Natalie Crossman finished with a 65. The Bull Dogs played without usual No. 5 or No. 6 golfer Macy Euler, who was sick.

“We definitely can do better than 162, but I’m definitely happy with our 1 and 2 the way they played,” North coach Scott Seavers said. “Nathaly is not feeling well, and she grinded it out for a solid score, and Annie played well all day. I’m really happy for those two. We just need to get everybody to play well altogether.”
