Former Columbus North standout and current Vermont senior Josh Speidel’s recovery from a February 2015 car accident took a little bit of a setback this weekend.
Speidel’s mother Lisa posted on Facebook that Josh went to a Vermont emergency room early Friday morning with severe abdominal pain. After a series of tests, the medical team determined he had a kink in his colon.
During the first surgery the kink resolved itself. Doctors left his abdomen open and went back in Sunday to determine if there was any nerve damage to his colon. After finding out there was no damage, they closed the incision.

Lisa Speidel said Josh will be in the hospital a while longer while he recovers. She mentioned that while Josh was in post-operation pain, he met and was able to encourage a 16-year-old cancer patient who followed Vermont basketball and knew Josh’s story.
Josh Speidel, the all-time leading scorer in Columbus High School/Columbus North boys basketball history, suffered a traumatic brain injury in an accident late in his senior year of high school.
Although Speidel was hospitalized for most of the rest of his senior year, Vermont basketball coach John Becker maintained his scholarship offer, and after a year of rehab, Speidel began taking classes and working out with the Catamounts basketball team a year later.
