Recognition deserved
Agriculture plays an important role in the state’s economy, and historically family farms have played a significant role. Some for a long time.
Four Bartholomew County farming families were honored recently with the Hoosier Homestead Award, which recognizes farms owned by the same family for 100 years or more. They were:
- Guinn homestead near the Jennings/Bartholomew County line
- Thayer homestead in the northeast corner of Haw Creek Township
- Speaker homestead in the White Creek area west of Jonesville
- Burney homestead east of Hope

The fact that these farms have been in the families for a century or more is remarkable. They are good examples of a family’s generational love of farming and dedication to agriculture.
Helpful fundraiser
The Columbus firefighters and the Columbus-based TerrorZ roller derby team deserve applause for squaring off in a match in order to benefit the Cheer Fund.
Together they raised more than $2,000 through the Skates and Ladders event Sunday, which will be used to provide Christmas gifts to more than 1,400 children in December.
The fun and entertainment they provided Sunday will help provide smiles for children at Christmastime.
