Three-vehicle accident closes I-65 lanes

Columbus police and firefighters shut down the northbound lanes of Interstate 65 on Saturday afternoon after a multi-vehicle accident resulted in serious injuries and one fatality.

The accident, reported at 4:45 p.m. at mile marker 67 on the interstate, involved three vehicles.

Columbus firefighters reported one of the vehicles was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived. Firefighters asked for additional support to provide water to the scene.

Lifeline helicopter landed on the interstate at 5:30 p.m. to pick up one of the accident victims, a 28-year-old female.

Police shut down the northbound lanes of Interstate 65, routing traffic off the interstate at the 64 mile marker in Walesboro.

First responders traveled south from the Columbus exit at mile marker 68 on the northbound lanes to reach the scene. Indiana State Police were also responding to the scene, along with accident reconstructionists.
