Olympians blank Owls

FLOYDS KNOBS — Class 3A No. 5 Columbus East opened postseason play Tuesday with a 3-0 win against Seymour in the opening round of the Floyd Central Sectional.

The Olympians (13-0-3) led only 1-0 at halftime after Logan Cline scored in the 16th minute off an assist from Jorge Nieto.

East then scored twice in the first seven minutes of the second half to gain some breathing room. Nieto scored in the 46th minute off an assist from Kevin Sanchez, Chris Quisenberry scored a minute later off an assist from Gabe Rivera.

“We did a great job of reading the defense that Seymour was playing,” East coach Brad Barber said. “They were giving us space in front, and we were able to break them down in the second half. Then, we got a lot of young guys playing time late in the match. It was a great team effort.”

The Olympians outshot the Owls 31-4, putting 15 shots on goal to one for Seymour. Zach Roberts recorded one save in 75 minutes, and Pete Coriden did not face a shot on goal over the final five minutes.

East will play New Albany, a 1-0 winner over Jeffersonville in Tuesday’s opener, in today’s second semifinal at around 7 p.m. Columbus North will face host Floyd Central in the 5 p.m. opener.
