Olympians claim title

Columbus East swept four matches Saturday to capture its own invitational.

The Olympians beat Class 2A No. 2 Wapahani 25-8, 20-25, 15-6; Plainfield 25-18, 19-25, 15-13 and Silver Creek 25-19, 18-25, 15-13 in pool play before downing Delta 25-10, 25-23 in the championship match.

Rilee Jessee pounded 33 kills, Gabby Dean and Regann Jessee each had six blocks, Kenzie Foster tallied 42 digs and Cadence Gilley served 10 aces to lead the Olympians (18-9). Regann Jessee also notched 26 kills and eight aces, and Rilee Jessee had two blocks, 37 digs and seven aces.

Also for East, Gabby Dean pounded 18, Reece Whitehead recorded 17 kills and Allison Mack added 15 kills and 33 digs. Katy Jordan two blocks, Reece Whitehead contributed 32 digs, Gilley added 22 digs and Mady Foster had 19 digs and three aces.

Jets win invitational

EDINBURGH — Class A No. 10 Hauser beat Greenwood Christian Academy 16-25, 25-9, 15-9; Jac-Cen-Del 2-0 25-9, 25-23 and Edinburgh 25-7, 25-13 to win Saturday’s Lancer Invitational.

Shelby Fugate pounded 24 kills, Aunaka Wasil recorded 56 assists, Hannah Johnson had five blocks, Kylie Lock tallied 25 digs and Mary Branum served six aces to lead the Jets (23-7).

Johnson also notched 17 kills, while Lock had two blocks. Fugate contributed 21 digs, and Andie Clark added four aces.

The Lancers beat Greewood Christian Academy 25-18, 25-22 and Jac-Cen-Del 25-21, 25-16 to finish second in the tournament with a 2-1 record.

North splits pair

TERRE HAUTE — Columbus North bounced back from a 25-19, 25-13, 14-25, 25-23 loss to Terre Haute North with a 25-22, 25-17, 23-25, 25-19 victory at Terre Haute South Saturday to earn the Conference Indiana split.

Emma Tynan pounded 25 kills, Reagan Kane recorded 74 assists, Madison White had seven blocks, Sydney Cooper tallied 30 digs and Kate Whaley served nine aces to lead the Bull Dogs (8-16, 2-3).

Also for North, Sarah Bennett notched 20 kills and five blocks, Madi Roop and Gabby Genth each added 15 kills and Kane totaled four blocks and three aces. Jalynn Reardon led the Bull Dogs with 18 digs against Terre Haute North and with seven aces against Terre Haute South.

Hawks win in five

The Columbus Hawks rallied from a one-set deficit Friday to beat Christian Academy of Madison 25-11, 16-25, 20-25, 27-25, 15-7 on senior night.

Sarah Lorimor led the Hawks (4-14-1) with 11 assists, 18 digs and nine aces; while McKiah Shearer pounded nine kills and one block and Elisabeth White recorded one block and 18 digs. Lila Hudson and Caleigh Owen also had one block apiece.

Also for the Hawks, Shearer tallied nine assists, 17 digs and four aces; and White added seven kills and four aces. Hailey Beth Rutledge notched 15 digs.

Panthers win sectional

HANOVER — Jennings County’s boys swept the top five positions Saturday to score a perfect 15 points and defend its Southwestern (Hanover) Sectional title. Austin finished second with 55.

Carter Leak won the race in 16 minutes, 17.6 for 5,000 meters (3.1 miles). Gavin Hendris finished second in 16:19.6, followed by Lane Elsner in third (16:47.0), Drew Stroud fourth (16:52.5) and AJ Siener fifth (16:59.7).

The Panther girls finished second with 67 points, trailing Charlestown’s 42. The top five teams advance to Saturday’s Columbus North Regional at Ceraland.

Jennings’ Emma Morrison won the girls race in 19:56.3. Elizabeth Wahlman and Halle Franks finished 12th and 13th in 21:38.6 and 21:45.7, while Heather Sea took 15th (21:52.8) and Rilee Hicks was 30th (23:42.3).

SD individuals advance

AURORA — South Decatur’s team did not advance to regional, but two Cougar boys and one girl qualified for Saturday’s Franklin Regional. Batesville swept the boys and girls team titles.

South Decatur’s boys finished sixth in the South Dearborn Sectional with 208 points, 100 out of the fifth-and-final team-qualifying spot. Trevor Newby and Nick Keppel took 26th and 27th in 18:37.2 and 18:47.9 to advance to regional.

The Cougar girls finished ninth with 178 points. Sierra Kalli qualified for regional with a 15th-place finish in 21:19.5.

Cougars fall in final

SEYMOUR — Trinity Lutheran saw its season come to an end Saturday with an 11-0 loss to Class A No. 12 Providence in the Trinity Sectional final.

The Cougars finish the season 3-12-1.

Lancers notch first win

JEFFERSONVILLE — Austin Streeval carried 25 times for 175 yards Friday to lead Edinburgh to its first win of the season Friday a 37-6 victory against Rock Creek Academy in a game played in Jeffersonville.

The Lancers (1-7) jumped out to a 25-6 halftime lead and never looked back.

“Our kids played tough and played a whole four quarters,” Edinburgh coach Tyler DeSpain said. “The defense in general stood out. It kind of shut them down and executed the game plan almost to perfection.”

Streeval started the scoring with a 2-yard touchdown run and closed it, as well, when he caught a 40-yard touchdown pass from Palmeter. Palmeter scored on runs of 8 and 1 yards and completed a 10-yard strike to Caleb Dewey. Darius Bennett scored 2-yard run.

Palmeter completed 11 of 23 passes for 205 yards. Lennon DeLoach carried 11 times for 85 yards.

Eagles edge Patriots

NASHVILLE — Noah Carter threw a 27-yard touchdown pass to Malachi Nickels late in the game, and Caleb Yager added the extra point to give Brown County a 9-8 Western Indiana Conference win Friday against Owen Valley.

The Eagles (3-5, 1-3) recorded a safety in the second quarter and led 2-0 at halftime. The Patriots went ahead with a touchdown and 2-point conversion in the fourth quarter.

Carter completed 12 of 19 passes for 125 yards. Waunblee Roux led the defense with 13 tackles.

“Defensively, we played real well,” Brown County coach Randy Minniear said. “I’m real proud of the kids.”

Red Devils top Panthers

JEFFERSONVILLE — Jennings County led 7-6 early in the second quarter Friday, but Jeffersonville scored 30 consecutive points and went on to hand the Panthers a 54-29 Hoosier Hills Conference loss.

Jared Corya caught 34- and 33-yard touchdown passes from Lance Bailey for the Panthers (3-5, 1-4). Peyton Hayden returned a fumble 75 yards for a score, and Owen Miller ran nine yards for the final touchdown.

Corya finished with four catches forf 83 yards.

Twisters topple Cougars

GREENSBURG — South Decatur rallied from a 20-0 deficit to within six, but Oldenburg Academy held on for a 20-14 Mid-Indiana Football Conference win on Friday.

“We got down, and we had to throw, and with the wind, we couldn’t throw very well,” South Decatur coach Rick Zimmerman said.

Wyatt Gatewood scored on runs of 8 and 9 yards for the Cougars (3-5, 2-3). Colton Johannigman ran for a 2-point conversion.
