Patberg selected preseason All-Big Ten

Indiana University women’s basketball player Ali Patberg was selected by both the coaches and the media as a preseason All-Big Ten selection on Monday.

The Hoosiers also were picked to finish third by the league’s coaches and fourth by the media in the annual Big Ten Conference preseason polls.

In addition, Patberg, a redshirt junior from Columbus North, was named one of 20 candidates for the Nancy Lieberman Award watch list on Monday.

Patberg was a All-Big Ten second team selection for the last season, averaging 15.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game.

The Hoosiers begin the regular season Nov. 7 against Mount St. Mary’s.

FOOTBALL

Crider moves to center

Indiana University player Harry Crider switched roles on the offensive line in the Hoosiers’ 34-28 win at Maryland on Saturday.

Crider, a junior from East, switched from his normal starting left guard spot to starting center. That didn’t stop the offensive line in helping the running attack gain 186 net yards rushing and two rushing touchdowns.

Crider and the Hoosiers are 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the Big Ten Conference. They will look to make it three wins in a row when they travel to take on Nebraska Saturday.

VOLLEYBALL

VanLiew still winning

Florida Gulf Coast University outside hitter Cortney VanLiew finished with 10 kills, five digs and a block in a 25-18, 25-13, 25-21 win against Florida International on Wednesday.

VanLiew, a junior from Columbus East, had five kills, two aces, a dig and a block in a 25-7, 25-11, 25-15 victory over New Jersey Institute of Technology on Saturday.

The Eagles are on an eight-match winning streak and are 18-3 overall and 7-1 in the ASUN Conference.

Williams contributing

Indiana University-Kokomo setter Kendal Williams recorded 25 assists, six digs and two aces in a 25-21, 25-17, 25-19 win over Indiana University Southeast on Tuesday.

Williams, a sophomore from East, added 21 assists, 11 digs, an ace and a kill in a 14-25, 25-20, 25-12, 25-19 loss to Point Park University on Friday. She finished with 16 assists, six aces, three digs and a kill in a 25-10, 25-17, 25-15 win over Carlow University on Saturday.

The Cougars are 18-9 overall and 8-1 in the River States Conference.

Rooks aids comeback win

Manchester University defensive specialist Mackenzie Rooks, a junior from North, recorded 10 digs in helping the Spartans to a 22-25, 23-25, 25-17, 25-22, 15-11 come from behind victory.

The Spartans are 10-12 overall and 0-4 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Metz plays in victory

Huntington University outside hitter Brea Metz, a junior from Hauser, recorded six kills, four digs and two blocks in a 25-16, 25-21, 18-25, 18-25, 15-8 win over Spring Arbor University.

The Foresters are 14-15 overall and are 6-8 in the Crossroads League.

Teo nets goal in win

Bellarmine University women’s forward Natalie Teo scored a goal in a 6-0 win over Southwest Baptist on Sunday.

Teo, a junior from North, has two goals on the season for the the Knights, who are 10-3-1 overall and 7-3-1 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

Smith scores in loss

Thomas More forward Ethan Smith, a senior from North, scored a goal in a 2-1 overtime loss to Pikeville University on Wednesday.

The Sanits are 4-8-1.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Tong places ninth

Hanover College women’s runner Arig Tong finished ninth place individually with a 6K (3.8-mile) time of 21 minutes, 55 seconds in the Inter-Regional Rumble hosted by Oberlin College on Saturday.

Tong, a sophomore from North, helped the Panthers place in 21st with 585 points. Host Oberlin won the event with a 104.

Lax runs strong

Belmont’s Sierra Lax finished 29th with a 6K time of 21:40 at the UAB Blazer Classic on Friday.

Lax, a senior from North, helped the Bruins to a ninth-place finish as a team.
