Crider helps Hoosiers become bowl-eligible

Harry Crider and the Indiana Hoosiers are now bowl eligible after defeating Nebraska 38-31 on Saturday.

Crider, a junior from Columbus East, started at left guard against the Cornhuskers after playing center the week prior against Maryland.

The Hoosiers are on a three game winning streak to improve to 6-2 and 3-2 in the Big Ten Conference and become bowl-eligible for the first time since 2016. They hope to make it four in a row when they take on Northwestern at 7 p.m. Saturday.

VOLLEYBALL

VanLiew rolls to wins

Florida Gulf Coast outside hitter Cortney VanLiew recorded 16 kills, eight digs and two assists in a 25-8, 25-10, 25-16 win over Jacksonville on Friday.

VanLiew, a junior from East, added nine kills, two digs and an ace in a 25-14, 25-6, 25-22 victory over North Alabama on Sunday.

The Eagles are on an 11-match winning streak to improve to 20-3 overall and 9-1 in the ASUN.

Schoen factors in win

Eastern Kentucky defensive specialist Sydney Schoen, a sophomore from Hauser, recorded 12 digs in a 27-25, 25-17, 25-22 win over Eastern Illinois on Saturday.

The Colonels are 8-16 overall and 3-7 in the Ohio Valley Conference.

Western splits pair

Northern Kentucky middle blocker Bailey Western finished with two kills and five blocks in a 25-23, 19-25, 25-22, 25-17 loss to Wright State University on Friday.

Western, a junior from East, added five kills in a 25-21, 25-18, 25-22 over IUPUI on Sunday.

The Norse are 11-11 overall and 4-6 in the Horizon League.

Williams nets three wins

IU-Kokomo setter Kendal Williams finished with 22 assists, two aces and two kills in a 25-17, 25-22, 25-15 victory over Cincinnati Christian on Oct. 22.

Williams, a sophomore from East, added 21 assists and five digs in a 25-14, 25-22, 25-19 over Asbury University on Friday, and recorded 19 assists five digs and two kills in a 25-17, 25-17, 25-20 win over Midway University on Saturday.

The Cougars improve to 21-9 overall and 11-1 in the River States Conference.

Rooks plays in losses

Manchester University defensive specialist Mackenzie Rooks recorded 11 digs and an ace in a 25-20, 25-22, 25-18 loss to Bluffton on Wednesday.

Rooks, a junior from Columbus North, added 11 digs in a 25-17, 27-25, 11-25, 25-20 loss to Mount St. Joseph on Saturday.

The Spartans are 10-14 overall and 0-6 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Major contributes in win

DePauw wide receiver Josh Major had one catch for five yards in an 8-6 win over Allegheny on Saturday.

Major, a sophomore from East, also had a 20-yard kickoff return. The Tigers are 4-3 overall.

Hogan, Horner see action

Hanover running back Jamon Hogan and wide receiver Cody Horner both saw some action in a 56-7 rout of Manchester on Saturday.

Hogan, a sophomore from East, ran the ball four times for 21 yards, while Horner, a freshman from East, had one kickoff return for 28 yards.

The Panthers improve to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Anderson wraps up fall

Holly Anderson carded a 160 for 36 holes to lead Purdue Fort-Wayne to a 10th-place finish in Central Michigan’s Chippewa Invitational to wrap up the fall season.

Anderson, a junior from North, shot a pair of 80s on Oct. 21 and Oct. 22. The Mastodons will begin their 2020 season in February.

Smith scores in victory

Thomas More forward Ethan Smith scored a goal in a 6-2 victory over Lincoln (Illinois) on Sunday to put the Saints at 5-9-1 overall.

Smith, a senior from North, wraps up the regular season on Wednesday with a home matchup against Georgetown (Kentucky).

MEN’S CROSS-COUNTRY

Rankin places 78th

Grace College’s Ben Rankin finished 78th individually to help the Lancers to an 18th-place team finish with 500 points in the NAIA Great Lakes Challenge on Saturday.

Rankin, a senior from North, clocked a time of 26 minutes, 40 seconds for 8,000 meters (5 miles).
