A local man whose body was discovered in a Columbus cornfield in early October died of an acute methamphetamine overdose, Bartholomew County Coroner Clayton Nolting said.
The body of Danny Ray Green, 39, 2340 N. Indianapolis Road in Columbus, was discovered on Oct. 3 about 25 feet off the east side of the road north of Tellman Camp Road by a farmer who was harvesting corn.
A forensic autopsy performed Oct. 4 found no anatomical cause of death, but toxicology results ordered as part of that autopsy showed an extremely high level of methamphetamine, Nolting said.
Green had been arrested by sheriff’s deputies on Oct. 1, booked into the jail and then released on a charge of leaving the scene of an accident, according to jail records. His bond had been set at $2,500, but Green was released under the new jail proxy that allows individuals who qualify to be released without having to post bond, jail records show.
A report was made of a missing person from the Indianapolis Road area at 2:30 p.m. Oct. 3, according to E911 dispatch.
Family members live nearby where Green’s body was found, Bartholomew County Sheriff Matt Myers said previously.
The death marks the 17th due to overdose this year, Nolting said.
