William “Bill” David York, 89, of Pine Lake in Arab, AL, formerly of Taylorsville, passed away Tuesday, November 12, 2019 at his residence. Mr. York, born January 24, 1930 to Albert York and Vada Ison in Whitesburg, KY, and married Frances D. Wyatt, Whitesburg, December 24, 1950.
Upon graduating, he decided to serve his country by joining the Army. After that term, Bill joined the Air Force where he spent 27 years until retirement.
Bill was a singer/musician and entertained bases he was stationed and local radio. He learned to play golf in USAF and enjoyed it until Parkinson’s made it impossible. After retirement from USAF, he joined Graham-Todd Motor Company, Columbus.
Here he met his dearest friend Robert (Bob) Walker (dec.) Together they ventured into Lincoln-Mercury dealership on National Road. Bill eventually operated his own dealership. Mr. York was a member of the Edinburgh, IN and Arab, AL Masonic Lodges and served as Master Mason for a combined 30 years.
He was an avid fisherman and spent hours in his boat and on the dock of his lakeside home in Arab. He was a kind, generous, caring man who loved to tell jokes and make people laugh.
Bill is survived by his wife, Margaret York, of Arab, AL; sons, David W. York (Reny) Athens, AL and Robert A. York, Arab, AL; daughters, Karen Quinlan (John) and Sharon Vaerten (Albert) both of Columbus; brother Richard York (Janice) Arab, AL; sister, Janette Mullins (Gene) of Columbus, IN; 8 grandchildren, and many “greats.”
He was preceded in death by his wife of 47 years Frances Diane Wyatt York; brothers, Marvin, Tommy, Henry, Albert Chan, Paul and Ruben.
Services were conducted November 14, at Arab Heritage Chapel, in Alabama; Richard and Tommy York, officiating. William D. York, MSSGT (ret) will return home to his final resting place beside his wife Frances, at Garland Brook Cemetery in Columbus.
The family is planning a Celebration of Life to honor Mr. York, Saturday, November 16, at 3:00 p.m. at New Hope Christian Church, Columbus, IN. Family and friends are invited to join in joy and happiness as they celebrate Bill and Frances’s life together.
