Duke Energy dealing with major power outage in North Vernon

Duke Energy is dealing with a number of power outages all over Indiana as high winds continue to bring down tree limbs and power lines.

Chip Orben, Duke Energy spokesman, said there are not major issues in Bartholomew County right now, but the utility is dealing with a transmission line issue in North Vernon resulting in a power outage in Jennings County affecting 3,500 people.

The transmission line in North Vernon feeds into a substation, making it a major issue, Orben said. The utility is in the process of assessing the situation and has given an estimated restoration time of 11:15 p.m. Wednesday night, Orben said.

Statewide, about 14,000 customers are without power, Orben said.

Anyone with a power outage should report it to 800-343-3525.

Orben cautioned area residents that they should stay away from any downed power lines and call Duke Energy immediately to report it.
