The Columbus North boys and girls swimmers hadn’t had a meet in 19 days, but that doesn’t mean they’ve been taking it easy.
The Bull Frogs put in some hard training over the break, and that resulted in several time drops on Thursday night when they began the 2020 portion of their schedule. Columbus North’s girls picked up a 98-88 win against Bloomington North, while the Cougar boys prevailed 117-65.
“This is a great meet for us coming out of our winter training,” North coach Logan Schaefer said. “The kids have done a lot of really good things, and even with the hard training, we’ve been doing a lot of personal-best times tonight.”
The Bull Frogs won nine of the 12 girls events, led by double individual winners Olivia Morlok and Betsy King. Morlok took the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 4.44 seconds and the 500 freestyle in 5:19.40.

“I think coming off of the long break without racing, you kind of get out of the routine of racing almost every week,” Morlok said. “So I think it was exciting to come back and see all the hard work we put in over Christmas training start to pay off leading into the climax of our season with conference and sectional coming up.”
King captured the 50 freestyle in 25.08 and the 100 freestyle in 54.29.
“I would say that winter training was pretty successful,” King said. “We came in every day with a positive attitude, wanting to come in and work hard. At the beginning of this meet, we didn’t have a lot of emotion, and then once the meet got started, we all started having fun, and we realized that the training from the winter break had paid off.”
Erica Samuel won the 200 individual medley in 2:14.75 and missed a second victory by only seven-hundreths of a second when she took second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:10.07. Karlie Brown took the 100 butterfly in 1:03.55, and Adeline Rush captured the 100 backstroke in 1:04.60.
“Karlie Brown had some great swims,” Schaefer said. “She’s been really putting in a lot of great work.”
The Bull Frogs also won the 200 freestyle (1:43.99) and 400 freestyle (4:10.99) relays.
The Columbus North boys won five individual events. Victors were Tristen Cook in the 200 IM (2:11.42), Kyan Jiles in the diving competition (234.75), Daniel Utterback in the 100 butterfly (56.15), David Fry in the 100 backstroke (58.33) and Pratt Badve in the 100 breaststroke (1:09.63).
