East girls down Stars

BEDFORD — The Columbus East girls won eight of the 12 events Thursday in rolling to a 108-68 win at Bedford North Lawrence.

Marin Wieneke won the 50-yard freestyle (26.12 seconds) and the 100 breaststroke (1:13.69), and Jennifer Utterback took the 100 freestyle (58.17) and 100 backstroke (1:07.80) to lead the Olympians.

East also had individual wins from Ellie Proffitt in the 200 individual medley (2:32.60) and Cloe McDonald in diving (161.50). The Olympians took the 200 medley (2:00.07) and 200 freestyle (1:50.11) relays.

Chad Kelly finished second in the 50 freestyle (23.92), and Colby Hertle was second in the 100 butterfly (1:07.55) to lead the East boys.

“Bedford’s No. 1 and No. 2 swimmers were some of the toughest competition we’ve faced all year,” East boys coach Dave Fribley said. “So the guys’ goal was just two swim against the watch, and the guys had a lot of (personal records) tonight.”

GREENSBURG — North Decatur jumped out to a 17-8 lead after one quarter and went on to hand South Decatur a 58-29 Mid-Hoosier Conference defeat.

Lana Bell led the Cougars (4-13, 0-4) with 12 points.
