Don Irvin Williams, 83, of Columbus, passed away Thursday January 9, 2020 at Bethany Village Senior Living Community in Indianapolis, IN after a lengthy illness.

Born on January 14, 1936, Don was the son of Jesse Virgil Williams and Ethel Morrison Williams of Ogilville. Don graduated from Columbus High School in 1953. On March 15, 1963 he married Carol Sue Thompson, also of Ogilville, and they were members of Ogilville Christian Church. Carol preceded Don in death by 3 months to the day.

Don proudly served in the United State Marine Corp from 1954 to 1958, and during his commission he traveled to Japan and The Philippines. Don retired in 2001 from Cummins Engine Company after a 42-year career, most of it spent at Plant 1 in Columbus.

Don was an exceptional outdoors man and loved hunting for deer in the woods near his Grandview Lake home as well as on annual trips to Maine with his closest friends. Don was a very skilled fisherman and caught several trophy large-mouth bass. Don was also an excellent athlete, playing competitive softball into his seventies.

Survivors include son Don I. Williams, Jr. of Columbus, daughter Stacy L. Williams of Columbus, son Ted I. Williams (Susan) of New Albany, IN, and son Kurt L. Williams (Tricia) of Greenwood, IN; seven grandchildren, Baylee Pruitt (Chris Resnick) of Chicago, IL, Josie Forsness (Ryan) of Columbus, Shelby Stahl of Seymour, IN, Alexander Williams of Nashville, TN, Claire Smith (Trevor) of New Haven, CT, Brody Williams of Greenwood, IN and Madelyn Williams of Greenwood, IN; three great-grandchildren Blakelynn Stevens of Seymour, IN, Hazel Forsness of Columbus, and Coltan Kaufman of Seymour, IN; a brother James C. Williams (Alma) of Columbus; two sisters, Joyce Ludwig (Rodney) of North Vernon and Gloria “Hon” Allman (Russell) of Seymour.

Don was preceded in death by his wife, his parents, sister L. Geraldine Eickelberry (James), brother Jesse V. Williams (Betty), sister B. Bettina Lewis (Harold), sister S. Leatrice Newkirk (Charles), sister Violet D. Brashears (Paul), and sister Neola J. Lord (William).

Don’s family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the caregivers, staff, and residents of the Auguste’s Cottage Memory Care Unit at Bethany Village in Indianapolis where Don spent his last four months of his life. Don made many friends while there and received outstanding and compassionate care.

The funeral service will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. Saturday, January 18, 2020 at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home on Washington Street with Trevor Smith officiating. Visitation will be held Friday, January 17, 2020 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. and Saturday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home. Military honors will be presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard. In keeping with the family’s wishes, cremation will take place after the service.

Burial will be at Mt. Healthy Cemetery.
