The Bartholomew County Coroner’s Office has had an unusually busy start to the year.

Two homicides in a three-day period — a fatal shooting in Columbus and a stabbing in Hope — as well as drug overdoses and a fatal car accident have contributed to a higher-than-usual caseload for Bartholomew County Coroner Clayton Nolting.

The coroner’s office had 13 cases during the first 15 days of the year – including two homicides, two drug overdoses, one suicide, one car accident, while the rest appear to be of natural causes,” Nolting said.

“In my years of doing this, it is the busiest first of the year that I’ve ever had,” he said.
