Club Olympia finished second out of 12 teams from northwest Indiana and northeast Illinois in the 2020 Munster Swim Club Sprints Invitational.
Swimmers from Club Olympia recorded 25 individual event titles, 19 runner-up finishes, one relay winner and two runner-up relays. They had six first-place high point award winners, two second-place high point winners and three third-place high point winners.
Claire Liu won all five of her Girls 6-and-under events, the 25-yard freestyle, 25 breaststroke, 25 backstroke, 25 butterfly and 50 freestyle, to win high point for her age group with 100 points.
Tony Machavariani won all five of his Boys 7-year-old races, the 25 freestyle, 25 breaststroke, 25 backstroke, 25 butterfly and 50 freestyle, to win high point with 100 points.
Joshua Pendleton also scored 100 points by winning all five of his Boys 9-year-old races, the 50 freestyle, 50 breaststroke, 50 backstroke, 50 butterfly and 100 freestyle, to win high point for his age.
Nalanie Cortez won the Girls 13-and-over 100 freestyle, 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly and came in second in the 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke to win the Girls 13-14 high point with 94 points.
Misha Machavariani won the Boys 11-12 50 breaststroke and 50 backstroke and placed second in the 50 freestyle, 100 freestyle and 50 butterfly to finish with 91 points and won the high point award for his age group.
Vivan Shah won the Boys 6U 25 butterfly and 50 freestyle and finished second in the 25 backstroke and 25 breaststroke and fourth in the 25 freestyle after an equipment malfunction on his start to win high point with 89 points.
Brady Beyer scored 88 points by winning the Boys 15-and-over 100 freestyle and 100 breaststroke and taking second in the 100 backstroke and 100 butterfly and fifth in the 50 freestyle. There was no high point scoring for the 15-and-over age group.
Shreyan Kulkarni finished in second in the Boys 7-year-old 25 freestyle, 50 freestyle and 25 butterfly and was third in the 25 breaststroke and 25 backstroke to earn the second-place award for high point for his age with 83 points.
Lily Pendleton scored 81 points by finishing second in the Girls 7-year-old 25 backstroke and 50 freestyle, third in the 25 freestyle and 25 breaststroke and fourth in the 25 butterfly to win the second-place high point award for her age.
Todd Hundley placed second in the Boys 11-12 50 breaststroke, third in the 50 freestyle, 50 backstroke and 50 butterfly and fourth in the 100 freestyle, to earn 80 points and get the third-place high point award for his age group with 80 points.
Avi Banerjee finished second in the Boys 7-year-old 25 backstroke and 25 breaststroke, third in the 25 butterfly, fourth in the 25 freestyle and fifth in the 50 freestyle to finish third in high point with 79 points for his age.
Ashley Freel placed third in the Girls 13-and-over 100 backstroke and fourth in the 100 butterfly and 100 freestyle in scoring 65 points to win the third-place award for high point her age group.
Connelly Furnish won the Girls 10-year-old 50 Breaststroke. The Girls 11-and-over 200 Free A relay won with Ashley Freel, Maggie Johnson, Hope Westphal and Nalanie Cortez.
HOCKEY
Teams have big weeks
Columbus Icemen Varsity blanked Evansville Thunder 5-0. Ty Boone scored two goals, Brayson Bennett netted one goal and two assists, Evan Federle and Andrew Clark each had one goal; and Blaine Humphrey, Wil Tearman and Luca Barnett all added one assist. Evan Kuzman recorded the shutout.
Columbus Squirts Orange beat Columbus Chill A2 10-0 and won 3-1. Drew Moenssen netted five goals and four assists; Henry Schloemer added three goals and one assist; Ryan McGhehey had two goals and three assists; Ayden Richardson scored goals and Tsukaso Udo notched one goal and Carter Kareus, Kai Bergmann, and Henry Jamerson all had one assist. Canyon Long was in net with a save percentage of 95.0.
Peewee B downed the Indy Fuel 6-1. Vaughn Moenssen netted three goals and one assist, Cole Finney added two goals and one assist, Drew Moenssen had one goal and one assist and Griffen Mudd and Tyson Tyner each notched two assists. Lane Barringer was in net with a save percentage of 94.1.
Peewee A beat the Bloomington Blades 6-1 and 3-1 and the Louisville Cardinals Gold 3-2 and 3-0. Westin Davis scored seven goals, Drew Weed added five goals, Wyatt Warner had two goals and Will Jamerson netted one goal. Vaughn Moenssen had three assists; Carson King added two assists and Hayden Johnson, Eduardo Aranda-Michel, Leif Nelson and Bryce McDonald all notched one assist. Jackson Wheatley had a save percentage of 95.0.
The Mites played four games against the Indy Colts in Carmel, winning 7-5 and falling 6-1, 5-3 and 10-9. Bentley Hampton, Carter Harris, Daniel Wallace, Keaton Grube, Logan Barringer, Lukas Jozsa and Robby Orgass all had goals or assists. Cayden Long played in net.
BROOMBALL
Playoff schedule set
The Columbus Broomball League playoffs begin today with three games. No. 2 seed Vagabonds (10-2) will play No.7 Jennings County BC (1-11) at 6:30 p.m., No. 3 Toyota Tsunamis (7-4-1) will face No. 6 Hansons (2-9-1) at 7:30 p.m. and No. 4 CCA (6-6) will meet No. 5 Our Name Is Earl (4-6-2) at 7:30 p.m.
Monsters of Rock (10-2) earned the No. 1 seed over Vagabonds because of fewer goals against and received a first-round bye.
Monsters closed the regular season last week with a 3-1 win against Our Name Is Earl. Kyle Roshak scored twice and Ben Eckhart once for Monsters. Dani Kareus had the goal for Earl.
Vagabonds topped Hansons and Jennings County BC both by 3-1 scores. Carlos Pernia, Shawn Bauman and Andy Nagus scored for Vagabonds against Hansons, whose goal came from Dave VanValkenburg. Josh D’Anna netted two goals, and Ryan Ingalls added one for Vagabonds against Jennings, whose goal came from Eric Wernke.
Toyota Tsunamis edged CCA 4-3. Matt Street netted three goals, and Greg McNealy added one for Tsunamis. Scott Herron, Max Warr and Cameron Tolliver scored for CCA.
BASKETBALL
Panthers, Owls split
The Jennings County seventh-grade boys Blue team beat Seymour 34-27 on Thursday. Landon Pike and Brock Maschino each scored eight points for the Panthers (4-11).
The Jennings eighth-grade boys Blue squad fell to Seymour 33-23. Taylor Bustle and Drew Burkman each had seven points for the Panthers (11-4).
