INDIANAPOLIS — Trinity Lutheran senior Rachel Sabotin put herself in position to chase a state championship one more time on Friday night.
Sabotin, a Columbus resident, turned in a strong showing during the girls state swimming preliminaries at IUPUI’s Indiana University Natatorium, moving into today’s championship finals in both of her events.
In the 100-yard butterfly, Sabotin hit the wall in 54.68 seconds, tied with Northridge’s Elsa Fretz for the third-best time of the night. Those two trailed just behind Devon Kitchel of Zionsville (53.79) and Elizabeth Broshears of Evansville Reitz (53.91).
Sabotin will also swim in the 200 individual medley final after swimming a 2:02.70 in the prelims, good for fourth on the evening. She trails top seed Kitchel (1:59.41) by more than three seconds.

Columbus North also will be scoring points in today’s finals, with Olivia Morlok leading the way. The senior turned in a strong time of 4:58.31 in the 500 freestyle, good for fifth place overall.
Fellow senior Betsy King reached the consolation final in the 100 freestyle, placing 15th in 52.37.
King also was 23rd in the 50 freestyle with a time of 24.35, and Erica Samuel was 25th in the 500 freestyle in 5:14.48.
King, Riddhi Garg, Bryleigh Shaffstall and Morlok were 23rd in the 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.25. The Bull Frogs were disqualified in the 400 free relay.
Today’s finals and consolations begin at 1 p.m.
