Hope’s Barbara Johnson, a Republic Woman of the Year, has died

One of the most honored women in Bartholomew County has died.

Barbara Johnson of Hope died Tuesday after a lengthy illness.  As an educator, Johnson received the 1995 Edna Folger Outstanding Teacher Award from the Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce. She was named Flatrock-Hawcreek School Corp Teacher of the Year twice.

In 1992, she was presented with a Sagamore of the Wabash by former Indiana Gov. Evan Bayh.  Her hometown chose her as  Heritage Days grand marshal in 2011.

In 2016, Johnson was honored as The Republic’s 35th Woman of the Year.  She has been especially active with historical and educational organizations such as the Yellow Trail Museum and the Simmons One-Room Schoolhouse.
