Two people, one who is a 17-year-old juvenile, were arrested early Monday morning after an attempted break in at the Columbus Police Department garage.

At about 4:40 a.m., a CPD officer observed suspects looking in a window at the Columbus Police Department garage, located at 2770 Verhulst Drive, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.

The officer who was parked near-by in his patrol car, observed that one of the suspects had their face covered with a bandanna. When the officer started his patrol car, the suspects fled to a vehicle which was parked in a near-by farm field, Harris said. The officer followed the suspect vehicle and conducted a high risk traffic stop a short time later with the assistance of additional officers from CPD and the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department.

After interviewing the occupants of the vehicle, the officers determined that the suspects intended to burglarize the police garage and wrecked patrol cars on the property but were interrupted when they were spotted by the officer who was parked at the garage.

Officers arrested Zachary A. Deberry, 20, of 2291 Illinois Ave., Columbus, on preliminary charges of attempted theft and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, Harris said. Deberry posted $10,000 bond and was released from the Bartholomew County Jail, jail officials said.

A 17-year-old juvenile was also taken into custody for attempted theft and possession of marijuana.
