Most park amenities closed through May

The Columbus Parks and Recreation Department has announced their soccer, baseball and softball fields, as well as handball courts, will remain closed through at least April 30.

In addition, basketball rims and volleyball nets have all been removed from the city’s recreational facilities, the department said. Picnic tables have been removed from park shelters in an effort to promote social distancing to curb the COVID-19 virus.

The city has also confirmed it will keep the following parks facilities closed to the public through this month:

The Commons

Donner Center

Columbus Gymnastics Center

Park Operations Service Center

Jolie Crider Memorial Skatepark

All tennis courts at Lincoln Park, Donner Park, and Harrison Ridge Park

Pickleball courts at Donner Park and Richards Elementary School

All public restrooms

All playgrounds

At this time, the facilities are expected to reopen on Friday, May 1. Parks officials say those who signed up for a parks and recreation program that normally occurs this time of year will receive a separate communication from a staff member with updates.

Although Greenbelt and Rocky Ford Par 3 golf courses are open, patrons may experience some modifications at the courses, such as different hours. For the latest updates, call 812-376-2684.

The decision to shut down most park amenities was made after local officials received guidance from the Indiana Governor’s office and the Indiana Department of Health, city officials said.

The Columbus Parks and Recreation Department is encouraging the public to either call for more information or to register for future activities.
