Suspect accused of breaking into local home

COLUMBUS, Ind. — A local man was arrested Wednesday afternoon after he was accused of breaking into a Columbus home and was apprehended with the assistance of a CPD police service dog.
At approximately 3:35 p.m., CPD officers were sent to a residence in the 700 block of Wilson Street, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman.
When the officers arrived, they observed evidence of forced entry into the home. The officers spoke to the homeowner who later arrived at the residence and advised that no one should be inside the home, Harris said.
Officers made several announcements for anyone inside the home to exit, however, no one inside complied. A few minutes later, several officers with the assistance of CPD canine Bane, entered the home and located Christopher A. Yarber, 35, of Columbus attempting to hide in the basement of the home, Harris said.
Yarber was placed under arrest and transported to Columbus Regional Hospital where he was treated for a dog bite to his shoulder, Harris said.
Yarber was eventually taken to the Bartholomew County Jail on preliminary charges of residential entry and a Bartholomew County warrant for a probation violation.
