COLUMBUS
Donald “Don” G. Johnson, 85, of Columbus, passed away at 12:35 a.m. Friday, May 15, 2020 at Brown County Health and Living Community in Nashville.
Don was born in Artemus, Kentucky, the son of Rice William and Edna Scalfe Johnson, Sr.
Known as, “Uncle Don” to many, was an Army Veteran that served in Korea. Don went to work at Contractor’s United Incorporated and retired as a superintendent at Milestone Contractors. He was a founding member of the Ogala Horse Camp and an avid horseman.
Don enjoyed fox hunting and camping with his father and brothers. He enjoyed traveling to multiple states, meeting new people and running hounds with them. Don built numerous houses and was involved with many building projects for family and friends. He always looked forward to the Thursday night poker games with his closest family and friends.
Don took great pride in his family and looked forward to visits from nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews, who he was always asking about. Uncle Don was loved by all who met him for his genuine kindness and caring nature.
Survivors include his nephew, Kevin (Laura) Johnson; brother, Michael Johnson, both of Columbus; sisters, Evelyn (Clayton) Nicholson of New Whiteland, Joann (Ronald) Blaker of Ocala, Florida, Wanda (Dan) Royer of Anaheim, California; sister-in-law, Margie Johnson of Seymour; several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Tom Johnson, Herman and Shirley Johnson, Rice and Carrie Johnson, Jr. and one infant brother and one infant sister.
Private family viewing will be at Barkes, Weaver & Glick Funeral Home. A public graveside service will be Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. at Mount Healthy Cemetery with Pastor Paul Huntsman officiating. Military honors will be presented by the Bartholomew County Veterans Honor Guard.
