Looking Back – May 28

Seniors at Columbus East, pictured above, and Columbus North threw untold amounts of paper into the air in a traditional observance of their last day of classes in 2010. At the end of day the paper was collected by school staff and taken to a recycling facility. From The Republic archives

Camp Atterbury west of Edinburgh was one of only three mobilization sites the Army planned to keep active in the long term to train about 4,000 service members a year for missions abroad.

Several Columbus businesses participated in “Foodbank 500,” sponsored by Human Services and FairOaks Mall, collecting more than 2,000 items of non-perishable food items for the Southern Indiana Food Bank.

1970

Columbus Police issued a warning to young riders of minibikes and their parents concerning the small motorized, two-wheel vehicles being ridden on public streets and roads illegally.
