Care packages offered to at-risk youth

Children involved in the court system are among those most impacted by the COVID-19 crisis. In response, the Bartholomew County Juvenile Detention Alternatives Initiative (JDAI) has taken steps to show its support to children and their siblings who are still living in often troubled households.

The JDAI initiative, which operates through Bartholomew County Circuit Court, assembled 120 reusable bags containing food items such as peanut butter, ramen noodles, chips and candy, as well as hygiene items.

These care packages were first provided to officers working in juvenile probation, so they could distribute them to kids and young people involved in alternative programs such as shelter care and home monitoring, JDAI coordinator Bobbie Shake said. All remaining bags will be handed out on a first-come basis. They will be distributed at 4:30 p.m. June 11, in the county parking lot on the north side of Second Street, across from the Bartholomew County Jail.

JDAI was created to reduce the juvenile detention population without jeopardizing public safety. Their mission is to improve outcomes and welfare of youth, such as reducing the traumatic impact of detention and keeping children in class.
