Around Town – June 5

Orchids to …

• Columbus city officials and the Columbus Police Department for their care and watching over those who attended Thursday’s solidarity rally.

• people who sent their kids to private school for K-8, but understand strong public schools are vital to our community and supported the referendum.

• Jean, an Insta-Cart shopper for Aldi’s, for going over and beyond by delivering the bananas to the quarantined old folks! from Helen.

• all those who supported the referendum making my move from Bartholomew County even easier.

• Mark Duwe, we all need to wear masks when around other people.

• Lee Hamilton for his columns urging us to think about our democracy.

• the Bartholomew County Sheriff’s Department for a presence on National Road to keep aggressive drivers from pushing turning autos off the road, from Linda.

• Don Strietelmeier for his excellent letter!

• President Obama for always speaking softly and with quiet authority and never hiding in the basement.

• Bartholomew County Clerk Jay Phelps for doing a great job with Tuesday’s primary and proving the fearmongering over mail-in voting fraud is clearly fake news.

• decorated military leaders for opposing the federal leader who is depriving citizens from expressing their First Amendment rights.

• all those who vote Nov. 3 to remove the federal elected official from office.

• the national park police denying using tear gas to disperse protestors.

• the nice man who defended the young blond woman who was being harassed by another man in the grocery store parking lot, from her grandparents.

• Dicie at Taco Bell west for her honesty and integrity in helping a forgetful customer.

• REMC for getting our lights back on so quickly.

• our neighbors (Jim, Mel, and Randy) building ramps for our front porch.

• Gen. James Mattis for saying this president is a threat to the Constitution and our American democracy.

• Mark Duwe’s letter in Thursday’s paper about wearing masks.

• the two nice young ladies at the Columbus Bureau of Motor Vehicles who helped me get in and out in 10 minutes, from a grateful customer.

• those who pay attention to Mr. Duwe’s letter to wear masks and safety goggles for safety.

Onions to …

• anyone who cares what the former federal elected official has to say.

• the federal elected official too afraid to speak with civil demonstrators but brave enough to sneak over to a nearby, historic Episcopal church for a private photo op — after troops cleared all law-abiding citizens, and holding a Bible no less.

• the federal elected official using the military against unarmed, peaceful American citizens and pushing them out of a public park so he doesn’t have to see them from his residence, a clear and sickening violation of the First Amendment and treating U.S. citizens as war combatants.

• the political party excusing and condoning police brutality, forcing folks to protest to protect their rights.

• the First Amendment, you should not have the right to protest as it only causes trouble and people need to be made to behave.

• the federal elected official for choosing the Bible as a prop.

• those who think sympathizing with protestors is a show of support.

• professional protesters who divide and degrade our country.

• people who don’t believe a political party indoctrinates.

• the quarterback who took the red herring from the federal elected official and parrots it through the power of his position.

• the local elected official who tried to play kingmaker in our local election by endorsing candidates, but they all lost.

• people buying into the false sense of security a symbolic mask of fear gives them.

• those who think “innocent until proven guilty” should only be applied to a murderer who we all saw serve as judge, jury and executioner for a helpless black man.

• self-centered individuals who pay money to spread their political bigotry.

• people saying we should make requirements based on so much misinformation and lack of knowledge, we’ve already done that and destroyed the economy.

• the letter writer who would clearly be happier in Russia.

• those who prioritize worshiping their political party affiliation over the value of mankind.

• the teachers for voting themselves raises in the middle of a pandemic and with unemployment exceeding 18% locally.

• the writer asking to sympathize with the police officer because George Floyd wasn’t considered innocent until proven guilty as he was being tried and executed on camera.

• the federal elected official and his photo op in front of a church with a Bible upside down because he wouldn’t recognize what was inside it if it hit him upside the head.

• the federal elected official causing many young people to change their plans about joining the military because they won’t use military force against peacefully protesting Americans who are exercising their First Amendment rights.

• comparing the federal elected official to Winston Churchill because there is no comparison to Winston Churchill fighting the Nazis and a leader fighting his own peaceful American citizens.

• the letter writer who still does not understand that the federal elected official was impeached and is still impeached because Congress is the only one who can impeach the president.

• those who think the media ignored the coronoavirus because they did not — it was the federal elected official who ignored the coronavirus for two months until the country was desperate.

• the letter about lock-down measures because the writer seems to prefer that we live in a dictatorship instead of a democracy.

• the political party sacrificing its values.

• the federal elected official who is supposedly the ranking evangelical leader in the U.S. not speaking out about the Word of God being used as a political prop.

• the scene of American peaceful citizens being mowed down, gassed, coughing and vomiting, which is a horrible scene, something you would expect to see in a dictatorship.

• the federal elected official for turning the Capital into a war zone.

• the federal elected official who turned holy ground into a battle ground.
