Letter: City should look at closing courses outside of Greenbelt

If Cummins has the wisdom to pull the plug on Otter Creek then why doesn’t the city do the same? The city has been following Cummins’ lead for years, why change now?

Think about it. Why would you abandon a historic and affordable golf course in the geographic center of our city in favor of a prohibitively expensive golf course out in the country.

Junior golfers have been riding their bikes, with clubs strapped on their backs, to Greenbelt for generations. I shudder to think of the dangerous consequences of a junior golfer’s bike trip to Otter Creek on county road 50N.

The last thing our city needs is a public-owned de facto country club. If those in authority or others are so concerned about who they might have to share a golf course with then they need to join Harrison Lake Country Club.

Otter Creek is prime real estate and would be ideal for a golf community. The city should sell Otter Creek to a private developer and use the proceeds to upgrade Greenbelt and Par 3 with seed money left over for improvement of the Donner Aquatic Center.

Closing Greenbelt would be one of the worst civic and political decisions in the history of Columbus.
