INDIANAPOLIS — The Indiana Arts Commission and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources are partnering to provide Arts in the Parks projects around the state.

Arts activities will be offered in state parks, state historic sites and state recreation areas.

Patricia Rhoden Bartels will host at the following events:

Brown County State Park, Saturday, Aug. 1, painting demonstration, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Meet at Hesitation Point.

Brown County State Park, Saturday, Aug. 22, draw-along with painting demonstration “Drawing the Dusk,” 6 to 8 p.m. at Nature Center lookout. Site will have 10 to 15 chairs, pre-registration is required. Bartels will provide a sketch book and drawing pencil to sketch and take notes for the first 15 visitors.

T.C. Steele Historic Site, 4220 T.C. Steele Road, Sunday, Aug. 2, painting demonstration, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Anabel Hopkins will conduct art activities at T.C. Steele Historic Site each Wednesday and Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. beginning Aug. 5. The final outing will be Wednesday, Aug. 26.

An activity for children will be offered Saturday, Aug. 8 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Kids can collect nature objects around the site and create “critters” or other designs that will be pasted onto a poster board.

Hopkins will work out of the Little Studio and offer free “make and takes” of fluid acrylic painting on ceramic tiles. She will also perform demonstrations of the technique. Workshops for acrylic pouring on canvas will be scheduled on Saturday, Aug. 22, each limited to five people, at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.

Reservations are required by calling T.C. Steele Site at 812-988-2785. Face masks will be required in the small studio.

Charlene Marsh will demonstrate her plein air, palette knife painting techniques at two state properties, Lake Monroe and Starve Hollow State Recreation Area.

On Saturday, Marsh will be painting, demonstrating, answering questions and guiding aspiring and advanced painters at Starve Hollow State Recreation Area swimming beach, 4345 S. County Road 275W, Vallonia, from noon to 3 p.m.

On Aug. 1, she will demonstrate, answer questions and help painters at Lake Monroe at the Lakeview Shelter House overlooking the beach at the Paynetown State Recreation area, 4850 S. State Road 446, Bloomington, also from noon to 3 p.m.

Look for signage and flags indicating the location of the two events, both are being held rain or shine.

Those who attend either of the two sessions may try hands-on painting for themselves. Supports, paint, brushes and guidance will be provided free for visitors to create their own paintings.

High quality, non-toxic, washable tempera paints suitable for children to use will be made available. Visitors may bring their own plein air painting supplies if they prefer.

All ages and experience levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced.

The arts activity sessions are supported by a grant from the Indiana Arts Commission and the Indiana Department of Natural Resources.
