Letter: Mask mandate doesn’t violate rights

During the Korean War, I enlisted in the Navy. After training, I was stationed at a base west of Yokohama, Japan. In Japan, everyone drives on the left side of the road. It was fun for the time.

Recently, I wished to drive on the left side of the road for old times sake, but I know there is a law against it for a good reason: for the safety of myself and others. I don’t see it as violating "my Constitutional rights."

I feel the same about Gov. Eric Holcomb’s proclamation to make  wearing masks mandatory. It is for my protection and the protection of others. State Rep. Jim Lucas and others don’t seem to understand this, and are critical of — and challenging — this mandate. My Constitutional right to swing my arm ends before contacting another person’s nose.

We know wearing masks reduces the spread of the virus. Since too many people did not respect the health of others, it was necessary for the governor to take executive action.
