Man carrying two handguns arrested in Central Middle School staff parking lot

A CPD school resource officer assigned to a Columbus middle school arrested a local man with two concealed firearms Wednesday after he was spotted by the officer on school property.

At approximately 11:15 a.m., CPD School Resource Officer Greg Ross, observed a man, later identified as Michael K. Jones, 38, of Columbus, acting suspiciously around vehicles in the Central Middle School staff parking area, said Lt. Matt Harris, Columbus Police Department spokesman. Ross made contact with Jones and took him into custody after determining that he was in possession of two handguns that were loaded and concealed on Jones.

Jones was transported to the Bartholomew County Jail where he was remanded with a 48 hour hold on a preliminary a charge of Possession of a Firearm on School Property, a Level 6 Felony.

Columbus Chief of Police, Michael Richardson stated; “I would like to commend Officer Ross for his swift actions today. This is just one example of why we have veteran law enforcement officers in our Columbus schools. By being proactive, rather than reactive, Officer Ross was able to investigate and confront a potential threat to student safety and arrest the suspect without incident.”

Detectives from the Columbus Police Department are assisting with this ongoing investigation.

COLUMBUS, Ind. — Columbus police have arrested a man who was found acting strangely while walking in a staff parking lot at Central Middle School at 11:15 a.m. today.

The man was found to be carrying two handguns when he was taken into custody.

No injuries were reported.
