North girls win Challenge

NASHVILLE — Third-ranked Columbus North swept the top three spots in the girls race to score the minimum six points and capture Wednesday’s Brown County Cross-County Challenge.

The season-opening event features two-person teams each running 2,500 meters (1.55 miles) on the Eagle Park Course. The places of each school’s top three two-person teams is added to reach their score.

The Bull Dogs’ Lily Baker and Mackenzie Barnett won the girls race in 18 minutes, 5.4 seconds. Jessica Meza and Brianna Newell finished second in 18:35.1, and Abby Jacobi and Julie Klaus were third in 19:02.3.

North also took positions 5-through-7. Ellen White and Katherine Rumsey ran 19:17.2, followed by Aric Tong and Alyssa Green in 19:26.2 and Madisyn Perry and Sydney Morlok in 19:32.1.

Brown County finished second with 22 points, and Columbus East was third with 27. The Eagles’ Hadley Gradolf and Abby Fleetwood placed fourth in 19:11.0, while Lexie Austin and Emelia Koester took 10th in 20:59.6 and Madalyn Purlee and Emma DeBord were 15th in 22:03.7.

East’s Elizabeth Stevens and Chole Krueger finished eighth in 20:39.1. Olivia Shoaf and Laurel Knight took 11th in 21:16.5, and Kerigan Greathouse and Jordan Spurgeon were 16th in 22:10.7.

New Albany edged Brown County 14-17 to win the boys meet, while East finished fifth with 44. The North boys did not compete.

Chase Austin and Rafe Silbaugh led the Eagles with a third-place finish in 16:45.3. Cord Smith and Rhett Silbaugh took sixth in 17:44.6, and Cameron Fox and Waylon Patrick were eighth in 18:11.3

For the Olympians, Casey Bartholomew and Tyler Hertle finished 11th in 19:05.3. Mason Curry and Cayden Lynott finished 15th in 20:16.2, and Jesse Schorer and Kaden Wise were 15th in 20:53.6.

East downs Woodmen

Peyton Meier won medalist honors with a 46 to lead Columbus East to a 196-277 win against Greenwood at Otter Creek.

Katie Hong carded a 47 for the Olympians. Harley Gant added a 50, Cristen Martinez shot 53, Carter Gant had a 55 and Lilly Steinwedel finished with a 60.

Lancers top Braves

FRANKLIN — Edinburgh switched from Timbergate to Deer Valley for its match with Indian Creek and came away with a 219-233 victory.

Morgan Calhoun led the Lancers with a 45. Annelise Lollar added a 52, Jillian Turner shot 59 and Serenity Smith had a 63.

Panthers rout Eagles

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County picked up its first win in 363 days, a 13-0 season-opening rout of Austin.

Nathan Davis led the Panthers with three goals and four assists. Christian Hernandez and Logan McIntosh each had two goals and two assists, and Ethan Brown scored two goals.

Gabe Wells added one goal and one assist. Jennings also used goals from Bryce McIntosh, Tyler Marksberry and Keaton Miller.

Draegan Ison and Wyatt Messer each played a half in goal, and each recorded two saves.

Floyd sweeps Jennings

NORTH VERNON — Jennings County dropped its Hoosier Hills Conference opener to Floyd Central 25-11, 25-13, 25-10.

The Panthers fell to 0-2 overall.

Braves edge Eagles

NASHVILLE — Indian Creek pulled out a three-set win at No. 2 singles to hand Brown County a 3-2 loss in its season opener.

Josh Miller beat Jaden Schrogham 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1 singles for the Eagles. Noah Cochran and Spencer Blee downed Jake Mitchell and Cass Mitchel 7-6 (4), 6-2 at No. 1 doubles.

Brown County’s Nolan Patterson fell to Brendan Conner 7-6 (6), 4-6, 7-6 (5) at No. 2 singles, and Reid Davis lost to Aiden Pemberton 6-3, 6-1 at No. 3 singles. Aidan Burt and Eli Sichting fell to Cole Allison and Trent Volz 6-2, 6-7 (3), 6-3 at No. 2 doubles.
