NORTH VERNON — In an effort to dispel the dark mood of the pandemic, teens and tweens are invited to the Jennings County Public Library to share in some Harry Potter-themed excitement this upcoming weekend.
There will be a free Harry Potter lock-in at the JCPL on Aug. 29 from 6 to 11 p.m., which is open to boys and girls between the ages of 11 and 17.
In spite of the pandemic, staff at JCPL say it has been successfully reopened to the public since May.
According to JCPL Children’s Program Director Katie Hopkins, masks are required in the library, hand sanitizers are provided throughout the facility, and the library staff continues to follow all pandemic-safety cleaning guidelines.

“It’s been a long time since we’ve had a lock-in, but our kids just need some fun, so we all got busy planning this” Hopkins said. “Normally, our teen lock-ins start at age 13, but since Harry Potter is so popular among what we call the ‘tween years,’ we decided to also include the 11- and 12-year-olds this time.”
The lock-in will take place in the Teen Room at the JCPL in North Vernon. The evening’s events will include a short class on the history of magic and the Harry Potter legend. There will also be a real-life game of Quidditch, which is a fictional sporting event in the books.
Participants will be divided into teams or houses to compete for a championship cup. Snacks and drinks will be provided.
Parents or guardians will need to promptly pick-up their child at 11 p.m. and registration ends Aug. 26.
“Teens who love Harry Potter can come to the library and have fun and not worry about COVID-19 for a while, “ said JCPL Teen Librarian Amanda Kingswell.
Registration can be made by calling the library at 812-346-2091, visiting www.jenningslib.org, or by visiting the library. The library is located at 2375 State Road 3 in North Vernon.
