Donald R. Delaney, 88, a resident of Columbus, Indiana, passed away Wednesday morning, September 9, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family.
Mr. Delaney was born July 23, 1932, in Corning, Indiana, the son of Patrick and Edith Clements Delaney. Donald and Wilma R. Hughes were married September 24, 1955.
Mr. Delaney was a U.S. Army veteran, stationed in Alaska during the Korean War. He was honorably discharged October 8, 1954.
Mr. Delaney received a Master’s Degree in Education from Indiana University.
In 1968, Mr. Delaney began a long career with the Bartholomew Consolidated School Corporation. Mr. D, as he was affectionately known, taught at Lincoln Elementary until his retirement in 2006.
He was a faithful member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, the Indiana Retired Teachers Association and the National Education Association.
Mr. Delaney was an avid reader, storyteller, enjoyed world-travel with his wife after retirement, and cherished spending time with his family.
Mr. Delaney is survived by his wife of nearly 65 years, Wilma; his children, Kelly (Laura) and Kathy; his grandchildren, Allyson (Joe), Connor (Courtney), Patrick (Kendra) and Macaidan; his great-grandchildren, Zelda and Monroe; his sister, Marlene; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Delaney was preceded in death by his parents and his twin brother, Dan Delaney.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, September 18, 2020 at St.
Bartholomew Catholic Church; the celebrant will be Father Clem Davis. Family and friends may
gather for visitation from 9-9:45 a.m. Friday at the church. Visitors are asked to follow social distancing guidelines and masks are required in the church.
Inurnment will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery in Corning, Indiana, with a celebration of life immediately following until 1:30 p.m. at the Irish Heritage Center (formerly St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Corning).
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions be made to the American Heart
Association.
